I am looking forward to more information on this turntable.
Dan,

I will describe you everything, and I will take pictures.

So getting back to my original ? Is the VPI scout a lateral move or a upgrade the technic SL1200 MK5 ? Should I just look at changing my tonearm/cartridge and keep the technic ?

David,

depending on your sonic preferences it could be an upgrade, a lateral move or a downgrade. Without more than a passing acquaintance with the SL1200, I can't really say. If your heart is set on a Scout, I'd try to find a used one so, if you don't like it, you will not lose much (or any) money because they are very easy to sell.
