We’re loving it here. So much to do. Great people. And yep, Amica’s has some of the best pizza going.

My opinion:

I wouldn’t return my wife’s gift.

I think the MT10 looks great.

I have the Avenger Reference. I wouldn’t settle for the regular Avenger if that’s the route you’re going. Magneto platter, rim drive, better feet, fatboy 12” gimbal or dual pivot. Plus you’re looking at a hi end cart. It’s gonna cost a lot more than the MT10. Just keep it.

Since the MT10 is a very good turntable you may get a bigger improvement in sound quality if you add a better dedicated phono preamp and cartridge to your system over a different TT. I have a C1100 preamp which has a decent phono stage but found significant improvement by using a decent separate phono preamp. Just my 2 cents.

I don't know guys, if my wife bought me a M10, I'd have to file for divorce. Time to eject!

Seriously, if I had a MT10 as a gift from my spouse, I'd have to keep it forever.
If I wanted a different turntable I'd make a new system and not tell the wife. I'd have to sneak around the garage late at night like a smooth operator listening to my 78rpm jazz records.

Default MT10 trade in?

Paired w/ the MA12000, just stick with the MT10.

The looks will grow on you. It’s a fantastic turntable. Complete set it and forget it, perfect for your stated needs.

You can get better performance out of your MT10 by upgrading your phono preamp (assume you are currently using the MC input on the MA12000), upgrading the stock cartridge, platform under the table, peripheral ring clamp, phono cable etc. having said that, the MT10 is great straight out of the box!

Your wife did real good buying you the MT10. As others have said, I’d keep it just for that reason alone!!!

If you feel need to buy a 2nd table, have at it, it’s fun/nice to have 2 setups/2 different cartridges to experiment with. I betcha you will find the MT10 hard to better without spending a lot more money.

I have compared my MT10 directly with a “hot rodded” VPI Scoutmaster + BENZ LPS and rega RP10 Apheta 2 tables, both tables I owned for years. no comparison IMO, the Mc wins.

If you aren’t happy with the sound of the MT10, I’m willing to bet the table isn’t properly set up. It really amazes me how great this table is in my system with stock cart, ring clamp, Stillpoints LPi, HRS shelf, WW interconnect, and MOON 610LP/820S phono preamp. Image1614026304.293183.jpg

My wife has been thoroughly amused by the comments, much appreciated. But in all seriousness it being a gift should not be taking into account to base your opinion. She is not going to be offended and actually has been looking at TT with me.

Again, this has nothing to do with sound, I’m still waiting on the MA12000. Hell the MT10 is temporarily sitting on a shelf plugged in the 205/121 system. Hopefully I will receive the isolation pads from HRS this week, and the stain guy is also scheduled to be done. Now if McIntosh would send the 12000 I will be in business. We did get the five shelf unit so some of these suggestions will be revisited. What phono amps should I be looking at?

Another big reason I was looking at the VPI is being able to have two arms and cartridges on the same setup. Changing cartridges from stereo to mono looks like quite the process. I need to spend a lot more time understanding that. Maybe just use the mono button on the amp?

Before this thread I was dead set on turning the MT10 in. Now I’m closer to 50/50, maybe even leaning towards keeping it.

Mono is based on the how the music is actually pressed into the record surface and a mono-cartridge with a conical stylus does a better job of playing mono records. Pushing the mono-button on your stereo does not do the same thing just as a stereo cartridge does not either.
With VPI's unipivot arms you can purchase a second tonearm wand for a second cartridge and the change of wands is simple. This may not be true with their gimbaled arm. As you said, if you are willing to pay a few thou more, VPI offers a very nice direct-drive turntable. At some point, it is rumored, they will offer it with the capability to use other than VPI tonearms.

Interesting
I have the Avenger Ref and am in the process of getting a 2nd fatboy for a mono cart... maybe. But I’m not yet completely sold on the mono... might get a different stereo cart.

The visual appeal of your system is an important consideration, and (bucking the trend here), I also don’t find the MT10, with its unnecessarily large base and (to my eyes) gaudy and unnecessary lighting, very appealing at all. If you don’t like the look and your wife is understanding, don’t settle for something you don’t love. There are many great options out there in your price range, including the VPI and Glenn’s earlier suggestion of the Technics and its removable head shell for swapping cartridges.
