Bison/Buffalo steak?
Has anyone ever tried one? They are delicious and have far lower fat than cow-derived steaks. The main problem is trying to find them at a decent price. Most of the online stores charge about $16-20/lb, which isn't that bad, but the shipping (within the US) is around $40-50! None of my local stores stock it.

I haven't tried the steaks but I have had Buffalo burgers. They were good, but not as good as the price difference suggested.

I've tried buffalo burgers, too. I agree, not worth the extra cost just for the taste, but the lower fat is worth it to me. I think the steaks taste considerably better than beef.

I've had the bison burgers and bison strip steak at Ted's Montana Grill......they're pretty good, excellent taste, but not quite as good IMO as a prime steak at a good steakhouse. I also agree with the above posters about not being quite worth the extra money, but worth trying if you've never had one before.

I have had bison burgers and was not impressed. They were not bad, just different. I prefer beef burgers for the few times I indulge in red meat. I also had ground bison on pizza and was not impressed. In both cases I tried the bison because it was locally grown and wanted an "adventure". Pizza-bison was in Ohio and the burger was in Montana.
The best steak I ever ate was prepared by a friend. I do not know what he marinated it in but I do know he started with organic beef from Oregon. Definitely a "cut" above grocery store beef. Possibly less expensive than bison. |

Try Allen Brothers -- they have it and somewhat reasonable shipping.
Happy Holidays Folks, Bob

I eat a fair amount of red meat, although I'm cutting back to just once a week, so low fat is appealing to me. Of course, I want it to taste good, too! That one buffalo steak was served in a rather swanky restaurant, and I don't know what all they did in the way of preparation, but it was incredibly juicy, tender, and tasty!

Saturated fat causing CHD is a myth (and it's not necessarily the fat but the crap that's in the fat that's the issue). There are several studies refuting it including one in 2010 that showed no relationship between palmitic acid and CHD. The real issue is not SFA but overeating carbs that are converted in the liver to trigylcerides and palmitic acid. (You can also throw in how overeating carbs overrides our brains ability to sense leptin; leptin's role is to help control our metabolism by sensing body fat.)
You can throw eggs in the same myth class! Read "It Begins With Food..." Very eye opening and for the skeptical, many peer reviewed references. You can download the ibooks version for $9. That said, many may like exotic game like buffalo, venison, ostrich, etc. because of the way the animals are raised and there's actually some taste to the meat. Most of the meat sold today, take chicken for instance, taste like rubbery cardboard. Or one can consider buying free range or organic meat (and yes, that recent study about organic meats was pure BS.)
