Default Ayre VX-R and MX-R: Is one better than the other?

Aside from the obvious...lower wattage in VXR, do these amps essentially sound the same....or does the VXR, being newer, sound "better"?

I believe the MXR is still Ayre's flagship amplifier, and should drive Wilsons to better performance than the VX-R.

Agreed.
  • If Sasha's then MX-R's
  • If Sophia's then MX-R's or VX-R's

Personally, I'ed go for the MX-R's as these amps will give me more wiggle room should I decide to upgrade my speakers which require those few extra watts in the future.

On a side note, having demo'ed various combos, to get the most out of the MX-R's or VX-R's, the KX-R preamp is perhaps the best fit with these amps.

I love my MXR's on my wilson maxx 3's....effortless...I am using a Nagra PLL as a preamp...I compared the KXR to the Nagra PLL directly...the KXR was quieter and more resolving...the Nagra PLL more demensional and more wetness on each musical note (tubes). Both are excellent

Default VX-R Early Thoughts..

After 8 hours of listening using MXR as baseline amp, we chose the VX-R. Amp arrived as ordered in black finish - pictures really do not do it justice. True Industrial ART ! Choose stereo amp because we have a favorite Stickley cabinet that we house the system in and mono blocs on the floor were not preferred. yes i understand some tradeoff on speaker cable length. VXR is even in output with amp it replaced a 10 YO Mac MC202. Ayre runs MUCH warmer and sounds better with 17 hours or so. So far I hear the very clear and finely etched midrange so evident in the MXR. Breakin will get better as I also pile hours on recently acquired ARC REF 5SE. part of the push to A new amp was I wanted to run balanced thruout signal chain. Have balanced Vandersteen Model 7 filters on order as i intend to eventually upgrade to 7 from 5a i have now.

Sort of a rambling first post but thought i had some small kernal of value to add to the vxr mxr conversation.

lovely Jim, thanks for your report.

loved both the mx-r and the ref5 when I had a chance to audition them, heard them on Sashas and my only complaints were in the bass only, not enough control. but the Vandersteen is active in the bass isn't it? must be a magic combo. great choices.

cheers
M
