Question on the Ayre sound

I am in process of evaluating USB DACs would be interested to hear what those who have the QB9 think...

For reference I have Mac MCD205 feeding a REF5 SE feeding a VX-R running Vandersteen 5 a

Eventually I can see going the music server DAC route w ipad control on the main system and rolling the Mac into my Mac "Vintage" system. I think the Mac is a fine sounding player, i get that it is certainly notbreference caliber. Thinking the QB might not be all that much of an upgrade. I think alternative choices would be the Ayre universal player with USB inputs...

Thoughts?
