Handel - Water Music & Music For The Royal Fireworks
Here is an old favorite of mine...
Handel: Water Music Suites Nos. 1-3, HWV348-350 Music for the Royal Fireworks, HWV351 L'Arte dell'Arco (on period instruments), Federico Guglielmo (Direction) This is my top choice for these great pieces. The playing from this Italian band is vibrant and engaging. All the musicianship is well captured by the clear and crisp SACD CPO recording. (Close second choices are the Savall SACD and the McGegan disc on Harmonia Mundi) |

More Schubert...
Schubert: Fantasie in C major, D760 'Wanderer' Schumann: Fantasie in C major, Op. 17 Maurizio Pollini I'm continuing my exploration of discs that I've meant to play, but have sat new on my shelf for a long time. Here is another gem that is long overdue for a turn on my disc player. An excellent DG recording from the 1970s finding Pollini at the top of his powers. |

I'm not sure how often I want to listen to a 38-minute Op.111, but when I do, I have one! I think his glacial tempos might be more effective live, providing no one lets an un-stifled cough rip! Typical hard, glassy early 1990s DG sound.

Philip Glass
Something new...
Glass, P: Symphony No. 9 for large symphony orchestra with expanded brass and percussion Bruckner Orchester Linz, Dennis Russell Davies I like this piece. It is substantial with good intensity and forward momentum. Very satisfying recording by the label Orange Mountain. Last edited by cma29; 07-17-2014 at 02:43 PM. |

Elgar - Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2
I keep exploring music I've seldom heard...
Elgar: Symphony No. 1 in A flat major, Op. 55 Symphony No. 2 in E flat major, Op. 63 Froissart Overture, Op. 19 The Philharmonia Orchestra, Sir Andrew Davis Listening to Symphy #1 now. Interesting British music, but not something I'll keep going back to often. The recording of this live performance is clear and dynamic. |

Arrgghhh - can't stand Elgar: particularly the symphonies. All boom and bust. Brave man.
Back to my Vivaldi.

I far prefer big boned performances over anemic HIP recordings.
