Default Tesla Powerwall

Hi Smart People,

I'm getting Tesla Powerwalls installed this week and was curious if anyone has looked into these and/or has solar power.

I have a bunch of panels today and rarely have a power bill but still have to use the grid at night and my power goes out during grid outages.

The idea is that:

1. generate + use + store energy during the day
2. use the stored energy during the evening
3. never have a power outage

Today the solar generates DC and an inverter converts to AC which then is used to power the house (or gets sent back to the grid).

The real questions are -
1. Since I'm generating my own AC, is it super awesome AC like that of PS Audio or what?
2. Since my audio is 100% on dedicated 20amp circuits, do you think there could be some sort of advantages sonically having powerwalls and solar for 100% of the house power needs?
3. Do you reckon my AC is dirtied by the AC of the grid if I rarely use the grid?

anyhoo, this is all for curiosity and discussion... what say you?

If you are powering an AC device in your home 100% from your powerwall, then yes.. I would think you would essentially be on "perfect" power. Having said this, I have literally no idea how the powerwall is producing the AC power from battery, but one would think (and hope) it would be one that wouldnt add much if any distortion.

My only complaint is that I lost most use of my back yard.

Right when on battery for sure I would think that.

But also I think the Solar DC to AC inverter also does this... maybe, I have no idea. The PS Audio noise harvestors are typically going nuts... after Thursday this week... let's see.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see what happens. I plan to run 100% battery at night and that's usually when I'm sitting in the family room listening to music.

You are probably right in that you should also be technically on "perfect" power if you are running 100% off the Solar inverter too. The only question is whether you would ever be consuming a low enough amount to not require any additional from the power company. I think solar is great in principle; its just so crazy inefficient that its not practical at small scale.

I'm adding 10 more panels which should push me over the "need" to use the grid mark, however it's still there just in case.

the powerwalls have a few different settings, one of which uses all excess solar energy to charge the batteries until full then sends the excess to the grid. Then at night (or on cloudy days) discharges the batteries for power to the house. Another is called "backup" where I can set a percentage of the battery to be held in case of power outages from the grid, at which time the powerwalls disconnects totally from the grid and energizes the house.

supposedly I will be able to go 7 days with no grid... last hurricane about 20 of my neighbors and I were down 5 days... and even the ones on propane powered generators ran out. fingers crossed this is the ticket

That literally made me chuckle out loud!

The second generation of the powerwall is supposed to be pretty damn good. The third generation is due this year.
