Default Two is better than one.

In recent years I have joined that growing part of our population, the single person household. On the pet front I went for a period of no pets to having two Siamese cats ( brothers). I got two so they had each other's company and were distracted from destructive behaviour. One died of heart issues after 7 years and a younger unrelated kitten was introduced.

One of the great benefits of dual cats is seeing just how different they are. Each is a true individual. I have a 12 year old and a 5 year old that worships the older cat. The young guy likes physical games and " fetch" while the older likes ATTENTION from me. One likes ice cream and hard cheese, the other likes cheese crackers and yogurt.

I just watched as the older cat prowled the listening room, the younger cat following in formation like a pride of lions, until they came to the end of the room and the older cat noticed he was being shadowed, turned tail and slinked off rapidly in indignant mode. I feel so sorry for the young guy, despite being bigger he could never be as tough or self contained as the old guy ( a cancer survivor so tough as nails after almost dying 3 years ago. I accidentally injured his tail in a cupboard door once, so he came to me and complained vocally about the bleeding injury, which fortunately the vet could fix).

The old guy mostly wants to hang with people, not cats, although he will socialise if it's sleep time.
