Default Documentary recommendation: Tim's Vermeer

If you are interested in art, science--or both, I believe you will really enjoy "Tim's Vermeer".

It's a documentary in which a complete amateur builds a lens+mirror "gizmo" which he then uses to paint a VERY Vermeer-like version of the master's "The Music Lesson".

Here's the original ... for the copy you'll have to see the movie:

There is a lot of speculation that Vermeer was able to paint with such realism because he used similar tools and technology.

I found it fascinating and I have to believe that some of you will really like it as well.

My wife and I finally found the time to watch this superb film last night. Trust me, you do not need to have an interest in art to find this fascinating.

The premise: can an inventor without an artistic bone in his body, and who previously never painted anything aside from two modest attempts to test his theory on simple subjects and tiny scale, recreate one of the greatest masterpieces in recorded history? All while only using meticulously crafted materials and devices available in the 17th century?

As riveted as I was while watching I have to admit at first I also found it somewhat unsettling--did anyone else who has seen it experience mixed emotions? One thing is certain, the film is deeply thought provoking!
