Yup! That's an excellent recommendation, too, Thanks, Craig! I use the upgraded version, the SOtM SMS-200 UltraNeo in my system; I didn't mention it because it is $1200, and I had forgotten that SOtM also makes a more affordable version, the "regular" SMS-200. Thanks for suggesting it.

Ah, for the Cat8, my recommendation was not because it was a Cat8 cable per se, but that it was the Supra Cat 8. That was the Supra cable I bought back when I did my exhaustive competitive benchmarking study of Ethernet cables back in 2019, and I was impressed with it for the price. I don't know if Supra makes a Cat 6 or 7. Anyhoo, it's better than the Audioquest Cinnamon, and a lot less expensive than either the Cinnamon or the AQ Vodka. 'Course, if you're gonna pony up for an AQ Vodka, get a Shunyata Venom Ethernet cable, because the Shunyata Venom blows it into the weeds.

Well.. could you run optical fibre from your router to your audio rack? That's what I do. Optical is really cheap, really easy to route, and outperforms copper Ethernet for a number of factors.

I'm no digital expert but I have a Node 2i at my girlfriend's and its sound quality is not very inspiring. I can't believe it gets all the praise it does, but I guess that's the nature of this hobby. I've played it with FLACs I know are good sounding from a PC network share, and it still gets trashed by a $500 Fluance RT85 which is subject to some VERY significant feedback issues where it's positioned. I've tried its internal DAC versus the DAC in a NAD C368 it's hooked up to, and they are equal variants of bad lol.

As other have said I'd focus on optimizing your iMac and pick out a DAC upgrade if it fits the budget. I've gotten some halfway decent digital sound from an iMac into a nice DAC. Sometimes an interface like Audiophilleo was necessary for good sound, depending on the DAC.

My system consists of a Mac Mini / USB output to a Schiit Modi 3+ / RCA cables to MX130 / MC7150 / SONUS FABER Chameleon towers.

I am not sure what you mean by optimizing the Mac. What can be done to it that will improve the sound, which is actually pretty dang good, but always chasing better.

Just remembered this solution this morning. I actually implemented this solution in my system to very good effect.

1) Get an Apple Airport Express. Put it near or on your audio rack.
2) Connect it to your network via Wifi.
3) Run an Ethernet cable from the Apple Airport Express to a Sonore microRendu with the one of the Ethernet cables I recommended.
4) Connect a good quality USB cable from the microRendu to your Schiit Modi 3 DAC
5) This is key....move your Mac Mini somewhere else. Preferably to another room. Connect to it to your network via Wifi.
6) You can use Roon or MinimServer, etc, to stream from your Mac Mini functioning as a server to the microRendu.

This will sound considerably better than connecting a USB cable directly from your Mac Mini to the Schiit Modi 3.

unfortunately the Mac Mini and the audio rack have to be in the same room. Very small house, and this is the only room available.

Okay, well then, put the Mac Mini on the opposite side of the room, and connect it to your network via Wifi.

Put an Apple Express that's on the same WiFi network in or near your audio rack and connect it to the microRendu with an Ethernet cable, and from the microRendu to the DAC with a USB cable.

The key thing here is that you really don't want to directly connect a Mac Mini to a DAC with a USB cable.

Thanks for all the information, but I guess I took the easy way out. I listened to all of the suggestions, and to be honest felt a little overwhelmed by it all. I decided to buy a Bluesound NODE and give it a try. If I am not happy with it, I will just have to bite the bullet and try something else.

That's cool, rj. But there should not be any bullet to bite. Just about any Node retailer will take it back if you do not like it. Good luck!
