Thanks. I broke my own rule of one change at a time but Dennis was so engaging that I went for it. Yes with the separate amp built in the x5 for the bottom end combined with a 97db efficiency it should mate very well.

Oh, you noticed the tube amp. That's just some old antique I picked up off of Craigslist. I traded [insert something untraceable here ... like some CD's or cables] for.

All of my troubles started when my 6bx7 started going south and I began swapping in 6sn7/6sl7 into the buffer position. Anyhow, glad to be back to somewhat normal!

I'm intrigued by Dennis's 45 amp. I've got a Waamamp 2a3/45 that's been my only real introduction to the 45 tube. I borrowed a pair of Emission Mesh GLobe 45's that do sound wonderful, just not a grand wonderful.

Last, has anyone rolled any 6bl7's into the buffer stage of their 3.1 preamp?
I did, in a LP27a, but preferred the BX7.

While I’m waiting for the kt88 inspire amp, does anyone see any issues with mating it with my wyred4sound stpse preamp?

I remain interested in this modification and am surprised more people haven't weighed in. It appears to me that the unconventional grounding methodology is the cause of hum issues in a measurable number of Inspire preamps, especially with those of us who have more sensitive speakers.

I'd like to know more. In my 3.1 preamp, hum is a problem. As detailed on these pages, I've come at it from a number of different angles. I'm able to mitigate the problem with tube swapping, etc., but I cannot get rid of it. And I would like to.

What amp are you using with it?

FireBottle Inspire.

Also, a Waamamp 45/2a3 (which also hums...)

Often thought my Magi phono pre had something to do with it but the hum is the same in both inputs (phono and signal coming from DAC).
