I own the LP-27a, and I was wondering how it compares to the LP-3a.

Still Learning. re: update on maybe not having to double the power... It looks like I went down the wrong path for a while and had to circle back.

So, this past weekend after seeing all the recent LP-3a posts and prior LP-27 talk in an attempt to learn about DH preamps here..., I realized with my larger 91db speakers I probably don't need a second amp for more power, however its seems I do need to ensure I'm using the proper preamp in front of the DH Inspire KT150 Hot Rod amp.

I swapped in my Cary SLP-98 preamp from my other system and paired it back up with the Inspire Hot Rod. Wallah. Worked great. Plenty of output, proper gain, whatever it is. Call me confused, now headed back in the right direction I guess...

Since I cannot permanently use my other 98 preamp for this Inspire full time, I guess I'll be looking for a dedicated preamp to run with it. May look for one down the road. I'm assuming most are running DH preamps, still trying to figure out what most people are using with the most confidence. LP-27, LP-3a, other?

Tony.......This is enjoyable watching you build your amplifier. The step by step photos are interesting to see. Thanks for sharing the build with us.

I'll take a stab at this for you and Jimi55. Long ago I concluded that it is usually best to use a pre from the same manufacturer as your amp. Why? Gain matching etc. can be a slippery slope.

I have the LP27a and have no reason to change it but today I'd go for the LP3a because of the plethora of 6sn7's. I find little sonic difference in 27 tubes and it is getting a little harder, but not impossible, to source quality samples. In my amp I prefer the Psvane CV-181's and can only wonder how they would work in the LP3a. My 2 cents.

So, what are the improvements in the new "Universal" series of Inspire amplifiers?
