A wonderful Pentatone SACD recorded in 2006

Pentatone usually does it right, whether it be new recordings like this one, or re-masters from the "quadro" Philips catalogue - the sounds eminating from these SACDs is nothing short of marvelous.

This wind concerto SACD is gorgeous. The performances and the sound are superb!

+1 for this great SACD. I like it

Default Mahler: Symphony No. 1

I'm enjoying...

Mahler: Symphony No. 1 in D major 'Titan'
Budapest Festival Orchestra, Iván Fischer

Lately I've been exploring Mahler's music with more interest. It took me 20 years to give him a serious audition and I've quickly realized that it was a mistake to wait so long to discover his music. The Resurrection symphony is quickly becoming one of my favorites, particularly the Fischer performance. Based on that, now I'm getting more familiar with the Titan. In my opinion, this is one of the best #1 symphonies in the repertoire, along with Brahms' and Beethoven's #1s.

The Titan has very listenable music with nice melodies and some impressive crescendos comfortably captured by this Channel Classics SACD. Fischer seems to have an ear for balance and attention to orchestration details. Next I will explore the 5th.

The sound is great on both, but I think he underplays the drama too much compared to Karajan, Bernstein, Solti, Sinopoli, etc.

Thanks for the tip, John. Once I really get into the music then I'll go on to the next phase which is to look for the dramatic interpretations. I have Bernstein's 5th with the VPO. Solti with the CSO for 2nd should be interesting.

Up early (6:00 east coast U.S.) and listening to some beautiful music.

Tchaikovsky - Variations on a Rococo Theme, Andante Cantabile
Saint Saens - Cello Concerto No. 1
Bruch - Kol Nidrei

Pieter Wispelwey - Cello
Die Deutche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen - Daniel Sepec - Conductor

A Channel Classics SACD, recorded in 2001

Typical outstanding Channel Classics sound . . . excellent playing . . . A very worthy addition to a high quality digital collection. This guy Wispelwey can really play the cello.

Gleefully switching horses to a little more dynamic genre of music . . . maybe to help me become more fully awake this Sunday morning.

Listening to Beethoven Symphonies No. 4 and No. 6
Budapest Festival Orchestra - Ivan Fischer, Conductor

A Channel Classics SACD recorded in 2010.

Amazing!!!! Beautiful!!!! Great music well played and extremely well recorded. This SACD is a winner.

Plowright plays these works with tremendous virtuosity, clearly captured by BIS' engineers.

I eagerly await the next volume:

Listening to . . Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 5

Munchner Philharmoniker - Sergiu Celibidache, Conductor

Wow, this guy makes the ordinary old Tchaikovsky 5th sound like an important piece of music (just kidding - but he does make what's good sound even better). A great orchestra - an excellent recording. Extremely dynamic . . . Wow, just Wow!
