You can certainly do that, but you may be making a trade off. You’d be going phonostage>headphone amp>preamp instead of phonostage>preamp>headphone amp, so you might get a quieter signal to your headphones, but noisier to your speakers. try it and see what happens, nothing to lose. If you still aren’t getting enough volume to your headphones, you’ll at least have eliminated the preamp as an issue.

Thanks Tony. It's not that I'm not getting enough volume when I listen to vinyl, but I may have to tweak the volume on my preamp from 20 to 30. Looks like I have some experiments to run.

I did disconnect the headphone amp from my DAC and ran it from the line out on my preamp and it worked. I do have to either crank up the headphone amp to around 10db on the dial or control the volume with the preamp. Getting a more powerful headphone amp might be the way around all that. Thanks to all that had a suggestion, your knowledge was invaluable.

I picked up a Channel Island Audio VHP-2 on Audiogon. Hopefully this will take care of the low volume output of the Musical Fidelity.

Hey Jack, how’s the new headphone amp working out?

Very nicely Tony. Thanks for asking. I feel I'm finely getting the sound I was looking for out of my HE560's and with all this self confinement I'm finding more time to listen to music. I have a couple other sets of input cables to try, just for fun and experimenting. I'm using a set of Zu Audio's and I have a set of Silver Dragon's to try next and a set of IXOS cables.
