Visiting Saint Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco once again.
Qobuz 44/16 Ever since Pomp & Pipes!, we’ve had many requests for MORE ORGAN MUSIC! In 1988, “Prof.” Keith Johnson recorded this CD to be sold only at St. Mary’s Cathedral. RR has obtained rights to issue it in a newly-remastered edition with superior graphics and entirely new music notes. Hear some of the most spectacular organ music ever written, brilliantly played on a huge Ruffatti instrument in a superb acoustical environment: works by Jeremiah Clarke, Johann Walther, Claude Balbastre, Julius Reubke, Charles Marie Widor and many more – including the “Carillon” by Louis Vierne, which was not on the original release! Reference Recordings® proudly presents two new works from leading American composer Jonathan Leshnoff. Distinguished by The New York Times as “a leader of contemporary American lyricism,” Leshnoff is renowned for his music’s striking harmonies, structural complexity, and powerful themes. These world premiere recordings showcase the Kansas City Symphony performing his third symphony, inspired by World War I letters home, with texts sung by baritone Stephen Powell. It is coupled with Leshnoff ’s new and exciting piano concerto, dedicated to and performed by pianist Joyce Yang.

Thierry Fischer, music director
ALISA KOLOSOVA, MEZZO-SOPRANO Utah Symphony Chorus University of Utah A Cappella Choir University of Utah Chamber Choir Barlow Bradford, Director Reference Recordings is proud to present the Utah Symphony conducted by Thierry Fischer, in grand new performances of Alexander Nevsky and the Lieutenant Kijé Suite, two of Prokofiev’s most brilliant and dramatic musical works. The music of Lieutenant Kijé was originally written as the score to the film of the same name, released in March 1934. It was Prokofiev’s first film music and his first commission. Prokofiev soon adapted it into the five-movement Lieutenant Kijé Suite, first performed in December 1934, and which quickly became a favorite in the international concert repertoire. Then, in 1938, Prokofiev collaborated with film director Eisenstein to create the score for the film Alexander Nevsky. He later adapted much of his score into the large-scale cantata for mezzo-soprano, orchestra and chorus featured on this recording. |
