For the curious, I attach a data sheet for a Schurter ceramic fuse.

Thoughts?

https://www.mouser.com/datasheet/2/3...il-1276004.pdf

The primary purpose of a fuse is to protect the equipment associated with it. Sound quality is also relevant but is a secondary consideration. A blown amplifier does not sound very good.

I have not seen any time vs. current curves for any of the audiophile fuses. Not have I seen any ultimate energy breaking capability ratings, which are especially of interest for the high powered amplifiers we use. Nor have I seen any evidence of UL or CSA certification.

Please correct me if any of the above information is incorrect.

Now with all that said, there are real physical reasons audiophile fuses may sound better. DC resistance, AC impedance, mechanically induced changes in fuse resistance- these are all real world differences that may impact the sound of the equipment fitted with these fuses.

I remain interested in exploring the sonic possibilities of hi fi fuses and they are on the list of power system improvements I will be making in the coming months.

I would feel much better if these fuses were as well specified as a 50 cent fuse from Bussman or Littlefuse.

Also if I could try them out at little to no cost to me, which I can usually do with cables, I would be more inclined to experiment as the cognitive bias of spent money would not be a factor.

Good post!

The only thing I would argue/add, the primary reason for a “mains” fuse (120/240 VAC) is for safety; protecting the gear is secondary.

No argument here.

Safety in this case is prevention of fire.

As an equipment designer it was always a challenge to determine the correct fuse rating that would blow in case of a fault but keep on trucking under the most stressful normal operating conditions.

This approach is very valid especially for "special" products that allegedly need to bed in compared with ordinary products which, based on an absence of comments to the contrary, do not.

Not in relation to fuses but in relation to grounding boxes which I was sold by a hugely enthusiastic distributor, I left them in place for months and then one day just removed them. No difference; a product to resell, and a tidier hifi rig. And, months after, nothing missed.

I suspect this approach is mentally easier to accommodate when compared with rejecting a potential product being heartily advocated by a salesman and by audio threads where purchasers and potential purchasers need reassuring words. The product rejection phase/test does not have the same distractions as it is individual and has more equal weight given to the two choices.

IanCG.......I agree with you that it is sometimes easier to detect what certain specific sound system tweaks contribute by removing them than when adding them. Once we become acclimated to a change in our system, reversing a change can be subtle, dramatic, or nonexistent. On the other hand, there are some additions to sound systems that are so impressive and positive that there would be no reason to remove them and lose the benefits. The exercises we go through to improve the quality of our sound system's performance is all part of the fun of being an audio enthusiast.
