Default Sony XBR77A9G

Just bought this TV. I will get it calibrated later but in the meantime I am wondering if anyone has one and what settings you are using or recommend.

This review of the A9G provides recommended calibration for SD. I used it and it did improve the factory settings for HD.

Hi elbig,

I am moving toward an A9G, though I've yet to decide between 55" and 65". In fact, I've an audition scheduled for Wednesday. I will be interested to know how your 77" is doing.

Update, 10/14: I bought the 55" version.

So, how much improvement did you see in standard definition with those adjustments?

I returned to the store yesterday and made a change. I opted for the 65" A9G instead, with full calibration. In particular, the SDR calibration will be of help for standard definition content. Tentative delivery is for the day after Thanksgiving.

I auditioned the 77" model, as it was on display. The 65" will be sharper, and to a greater degree than the 55" would be vs. the 65". The 77" set's pixels are larger and further apart than on the 65", but most of my test discs were good. Wanted: Dead or Alive was quite good-looking for an old TV show, and the store owner was surprised to hear that the Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood Live from Madison Square Garden DVD wasn't a blu-ray. The one exception is my Yes Live at Montreaux DVD; shots of Rick Wakeman's keyboards looked like white hash. Calibration will help with that, I'm thinking.

I'm not a fan of the Sony's design, but that will be offset a bit by the larger size; the 65" set will have more visual weight than the 55" set, in my opinion.

Getting closer. My A9G passed its QC tests and pro calibration will be next. "Custom" picture mode is best in general, and especially for movies, based upon what I saw with the A8H I saw first trip to the store. Will be interesting to see how the A9G looks once it's fully calibrated and what the settings are.

I'm still a bit melancholy about giving up my Kuro, but am developing a sense of anticipation regarding the new Sony too (finally).

Got mine today. I'm using "Custom For Pro 1" setting with the brightness turned down a bit. Looks quite a bit like my plasma.
