Sony 52" XBR Is Coming

The Pioneer Elite PRO510HD has been doing a fine job for the past seven years, but there have been some great advances in televisions during that time, like 1080P and HDMI, which the Pioneer doesn't provide. So today I ordered a new Sony KDL-52XBR9 from Sound Ideas in Gainesville, Florida. Paul and the gang are all great folks, and I enjoy doing business with them over the big-box stores. I prefer the personal relationship touch.

I had been considering the new Sony KDL-55XBR8, which is a 55 inch LED LCD, with Sony's new tri-colored LED system, but the overall dimensions would not work where the display will go. The LED LCD displays are still in first generation development, and the off axis viewing angle on the LED LCD screens is not quite as wide as LCD cold cathod tube lighting. I'm sure it will improve.

I gave the Sony 52 inch XBR, there newest model, a good look today, and took the plunge. Now, I need to decide what display stand I want to use, and then I'll be ready for delivery. Sound Ideas is bringing the new Sony when I call, and is taking the Pioneer PRO510HD with them when they leave. I'm certainly glad I don't have to man handle that big 53 inch rear projection TV down the stairs to ground level.

I am looking forward to the new Sony widescreen, and watching Blu-Ray in 1080P instead of 1080i. This is going to be great.

Congratulations, Dan. That is a really good display. I was helping a friend shop for a new TV last weekend, and your new set is the same as what we decided we liked the best!

Jim.......Actually, I don't watch 30 minutes of television a day. I catch the weather channel, and about 20 minutes of TrueTV's Wildest Chases or Speeders around 1:30 AM after I'm in bed. It only takes about 20 minutes of TV before I'm ready to shut it off and go to sleep.

The TV is Marlene's favorite entertainment. She would have it on 24 hours a day if it wasn't for me. I bought her a pair of wireless headphones to use with TV. That way she can enjoy Oprah, Lifetime For Women, General Hospital, HSN and QVC to her hearts content without making me uptight. I don't mind seeing one of the TV's on as I move about the house, but having to listen to the constant dribble that comes out of the speakers drives me nuts.

I do like to watch a movie once or twice a week, but sometimes I'll have a Blu-Ray movie from NetFlix around here for two weeks or longer before I'll watch it. It just depends on what I am doing. Sometimes when guests are here, we watch a movie. That's always enjoyable.

I watch college football and basketball, some hockey and the occasional big sporting event, such as the Ryder Cup or Olympics. I tried to catch HBO's series such as The Wire, Deadwood, Rome, Sopranos, and I love Two and a Half Men. Other than that my wife watches it in the evening alone most of the time.

Let us know after you've spent some time with your new Sony if, in a dark room environment, the black levels are up to par with the plasma.
I sell both Sony & Pioneer in my furniture stores. In a lit room, I like
LCD. But in a room with light control, I still prefer plasma for blacker blacks and seems to deal better with sweeping camera shots.

With Pioneer plasma's being the current benchmark, it does seem that other technologies are quickly narrowing the gap. Good thing since Pioneer has stopped making TV's.

Let use know what you experience. I need to replace a 60". Was planning on trying to get a deal on a close-out Pioneer Plasma Pro, while supple lasts.

dpgstereo.......I'll keep you posted. The new 52XBR9 has Sony's Motionflow 240Hz technology and delivers natural motion during high-action scenes. As for black levels, LCD's have steadily improved, although they are still below the best plasma displays, but plenty good enough for me. The Sony 52XBR9 has a remarkable picture.
