Seems like a great product...

I look very seriously at the Olives when they first came out..

I could see that, Music Servers were the future...

You have to get it to the server somehow and very few sources are selling uncompressed files so we need an optical option here somewhere.

Stephen.......I don't think so. Record labels will continue to produce CD's for years to come, not to mention the warehouses worldwide full of CD's waiting to be sold. Even with sales down, the numbers still support major production efforts, income for artists and labels, plus CD's are still a consumer favorite.

How dead would optical be if in the near future Hi-Rez .wav file discs became commercially available in the $15.00 to $25.00 range. I don't think there is a large enough consumer base to see huge sales numbers like CD's, but I would imagine Hi-Rez sales would prosper along the lines of the LP sales numbers initially, and grow from there.

It is only my opinion, but Hi-Rez downloads will most likely appeal to about the same number of enthusiasts as would Hi-Rez discs, and leave you with no hard copy backups. This will appeal to some, but not all.

Optical is a long ways from dead.

Price is right, but I wonder how it holds up against a 1TB Mac Mini server for $999 (before discounts) to an external DAC via Optical out. After all, it's about the sound right.
