Default Need help building a media server

Hello there,

I want to build a media server for my listening room. I know what I want it to do, but I don't how or where should I start to make it come true.

What I have in mind is to have a dedicated computer (I have a spare one) connected with USB cable in a DAC (be it a D100 or MCD500). I would like to use iTunes for playback and use apple remote with my spare iPod touch 3 Gen as an interface. This is how I believe I could build this but I want to know if there are other alternatives, or what is the prefered technique. I would like to rip my CD collection myself, using iTubes to create ALAC files.

What you think about this setup?

Thanks

With the spare computer now, you can be up and running in no time. ALAC a good choice in my opinion.

I've been building (on 5th generation now) dedicated PCs for a few years now to use for digital playback. In recent couple years, all USB Asynchronous to DAC, works great, sounds great.

I have a combination of ripped CD content as well as downloaded high-rez.
All in FLAC0 with a few WAV thrown in for fun.

In my case I build custom PCs for the server. Main thing is to have a solid digital format (i.e. ALAC) and a good DAC that you can live with while you experiment/tweak the Server. I've never liked to use iTunes for a dedicated music playing appliance, but many others use and prefer it.

Good Luck!

My understanding is that Windows iTunes can be a big hog of resources.

I think Jriver is supposed to be a better app for Windows so you might want to consider that. They also have their own iOS remote app.

Look also to get JPlay. I haven't played with it in a while but it wasn't designed for headless playback in the past but it sounded the best.

I still find for headless server playback, the Mac mini is still ideal.

+5 for J-River.

When I get back to a computer with a real keyboard, I'll write more about my journey with this. It's all doable.
