Since the NAS is a RAID10 array - that is your backup. You could easily set-up an off-site backup, like MozyPro, as well (in case, say, your house burned down).

I would have expected two NAS boxes or one of those fancy 6TB drives that you can backup your primary storage. RAID only improves the reliability of the hardware and can't protect against a virus, RIAA malware, dumb user tricks, power surge, thermal events, theft, fire and even certain types of hardware failure can still cause corruption with the nested, mirrored drives.

No such thing as a single 6TB drive - 3TB is as large as they get today - and many of them are still problematic.

You could run two NAS boxes and have them mirror each other, or "backup" on time intervals (daily/weekly, etc. - so as long as you catch your 'dumb user trick' you can fix it).

And having an on-site backup still leaves you vulnerable to the majority of what you previously stated. Unfortunately (due to cost), the best way to ensure actual data protection is the off-site method. However, if you back-up the virus, well... yeah.

You could go buy a simple external USB drive, backup the current content, and keep it at your office in a nice cool spot... there are a lot of options, depending on what your budget is.

I should also have stated that there are three images of the entire array - one that is on the NAS, a snapshot that was taken after install here on my local server, and finally on another array at my office. However, that was a static operation. But, we typically sync the data once a quarter or so (we really don't want to deal with the cost of an off-site solution right now).

For those planning something similar...if you do not have the intention to overclock the CPU, the i7 2600 will do just fine. The only difference with the 2600K is that the K version has unlocked multipliers allowing overclocking

I just ordered a silent PC...probably louder than a mousefart...but considering this will be a gaming rig for the living room, still within tolerable levels.

This is the case (Fractal Design), isolated with noise absorbing material and the cooler Scythe Mugen 2

Nice case - Define R3 Silver Arrow? I like the sliding trays for the HDD's - but after using RevoDrive (especially for gaming) - I don't think I'll ever use a spinning hard drive ever again for any build except for massive storage and arrays located elsewhere in the house.

Also a big fan of Scythe stuff - very high quality, but be careful - those fans will snap in an instant if you are even slightly rough on them.

When I purchased the CPU the K (unlocked) and regular version were both with around 5 bucks of each other - just in case I was getting frisky I got the unlocked cores... Right now people are easily getting 4.5 GHz out of those chips on air, and still running fairly cool.

Used to have a OC capable monster gaming rig, but never bothered to overclock...and last week, when the PS gave out and fried the Motherboard, I realised I spent a lot of money on stuff I never used.

I love the SSD boot card...didn't know it existed...thx for the education
