Can the Olive 04HD expose its files to Sonos as a share? What I'd like is server with both red book and hi res files, that 1) I can use for dedicated listening sessions and 2) can make the red book files available to Sonos for distribution around the house, patio, etc for casual and background listening.

I know I can do this by rolling my own (macmini, pure music, etc), and I THINK the BDP-1 can expose whatever you connect via USB as an SMB share. But an all-in-one solution would be nice too.

John.......I don't have my Olive 04HD yet, but perhaps Jim can answer this question for you. I know that my Sonos can index and play all the files on my McIntosh MS750 through my home's local area network.

No the Olive tracks cannot be made available to SonoS. Olive is in business to sell hardware so they really want you to use their gear.

Jérôme.......I have been wanting to put a dedicated music server into the studio two channel system, but I don't have the room to squeeze another MS750 into the rack. I do have enough room to get the Olive 04HD installed above the C1000C controller. It will be here next Tuesday. I plan to connect the analog outputs to the C1000P, and the digital output to the MCD1100. This way I can make direct A/B comparisons of the 24Bit TI Burr-Brown DAC's to the ESS 32Bit Sabre Dual Quad DAC's in the MCD1100. I ordered a new Wireworld Silver Starlight 6 digital coaxial RCA to BNC cable for the connection. Looking forward to the results.

Now I have the unglamorous and time consuming chore of loading a 1000 CD's onto the Olive's 2TB hard drive.

Dan, the MCD1100 will win hands down. The MDA 1000 smoked the Olive 4 HD in a direct a/ b test I made.
Well, you have some work waiting for you my friend !

Dan, congrats on the score. I hope you enjoy it. 1000 discs, huh? That sounds like quite a feat. I think I read that Olive will upload the discs for you, if you prefer. I think the first hundred or so are free.

I am now 240 CDs loaded on the Olive, I do about 10 each time I have a half hour or so. Every CD was read from the cddb within seconds. The Internet stations have been a blast to explore and I have already saved many favorites for immediate access. Only had time for one "playlist" so far but will play it tonight as we bring in the new year at midnight!

Happy New Year to all...

Jimmy

P.S. Loading in FLAC Lossless and from my math I have room for 5538 more CDs on this 2TB HD!

Sean.......Thanks. I have already loaded 1000 CD's into my MS750 in the living room system, so I know what's ahead of me.

I am most interested in hearing the difference in the DAC's between the Olive 04HD and the DAC's in my MCD1100. My new Wireworld Silver Starlight 6 digital coaxial cable, and a new Wireworld Starlight 6 HDMI cable will be here Tuesday, the same day the Olive will arrive. Looking forward to getting the 04HD set up in the studio system.
