Tube rolling note:
In my Inspire SEP I have settled on 1960's Mullard EL-34 Xf2 output tubes as my current favorites. Expensive and hard to find good examples these days without being really expensive. So I ordered a pair of current production Mullard EL-34's that are Russian made and modeled after the original Xf2's. Only $46/pair shipped. We'll see how they compare. Would be nice if they do the job. |

Those measurements should be all with the 5V4 because they are several days old. Power output shouldn't change since the voltage drop associated with the rectifiers still leaves the resultant voltages above the regulated level. However, as previously noted, the sound quality may change. And Dennis has experimented with motorized volume control, but I don't know if it's ever been incorporated into a pre amp....

Interesting. This PS in a PSE should result in a legit 25W PSE KT88 amp, 20W 6L6, or 10-14W 6V6 amp.

I searched the thread and didn't see anybody using these, but I found what looks like it could be gem: "Melz hole plate 6N8S"
Anybody using that, impressions? I also recently picked up a Mullard f31 fat base 5v4g, also some tung-sol 3 hole plates based on that "hot-rod" impressions earlier back. I bought some nos 2 hole bottom getter 6sn7, but what I'm thinking is this. Tung-sol 3 hole + Melz 5 hole + Mullard f31 = potential magic? If the Mullard doesn't cut it, maybe I'll get a Princess 274B mesh.... I also just passed the price of the amp, in all the tubes I've bought, I think I have a problem fyi my amp is the "fire-bottle" version |

Has anyone heard Tonian speakers? The ones with Phy 12" drivers and Tonian ribbon tweeters.

EXCLUSIVE GT design. The GE is a faithful reproduction of the original “clear top” 6L6. The flagship of the GT 6L6 line, it looks and sounds exactly like the original G.E. tube used by Fender® in the ‘50s and ‘60s. It took more than four years to develop, and has stunning clarity and power. Our most recommended 6L6. Single 6L6 tube in “medium” power range. 555-0113-682 $39.99 Matched pair of 6L6 tubes in “Medium” power range 555-0113-503 $79.99 Matched quartet of 6L6 tubes in “medium” power range. 555-0113-506 $159.99 Matched sextet of 6L6 tubes in “medium” power range. 555-0113-539 $239.99 I've noticed people are using the 5V4/5V4G/5V4GA variants in the rectifier position. The closest I've been to those is my Brimar 5Z4 GY which is second choice for me against the trusty SE 274B MP. Can I use the 5V4 variants without issues in my Inspire KT88 SET with oversized (20 watts) transformers? Thanks to anyone offering feedback. Last edited by Musica Amantem; 09-10-2016 at 02:57 PM. |
