John.......The Lincoln MKS is out in the garage. It is also a very nice vehicle, loaded with luxury toys, and drives and handles well. I have discovered that I don't care for front wheel drive. I had never owned a front wheel drive vehicle before the MKS, and during the test drive with the sales gal in the vehicle with me, I never really pushed the accelerator to test the hard acceleration performance. The vehicle handles very well, but the engine torque on the front wheel drive wants to pull the steering wheel back to a straight ahead line under hard acceleration while negotiating turns. I am finding this ascpect of steering control something I have to learn how to handle, because the MKS under acceleration handles differently than a rear wheel drive vehicle under acceleration. I have 48 years experience driving and understanding the physics and handling characteristics of rear wheel drive. I prefer it far more than what I am experiencing with the front wheel drive Lincoln MKS.
I felt completely at home driving the Jaguar XF today. V8 power, rear wheel drive, independent suspension, perfect. I was surprised, but the Jag saleman actually encouraged me to push the vehicle. I was on a long curving on-ramp to I-295 when he suggested I use the steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. I dropped down two gears by tapping the left paddle, pressed the accelerator, and the Jag felt like a magnet on the asphalt as it rocketed around the curve of the ramp. I came off the on-ramp into traffic at about 84 mph, and it felt like 50 mph. Solid control, no fighting steering wheel torque trying to straighten the wheel. The Jaguar XF experience was beautiful. That is what I am after. It is not like I no longer enjoy the Lincoln MKS, because I do. It is quick, very comfortable, has a quiet interior, a jam up sound system, beautiful 8" VGA navigation/entertainment center screen, and is averaging 24 mpg. It has all the toys, including adaptive cruise control and adaptive xenon headlamps, auto wipers, and lots more. The leather and wood interior appointments are very attractive. The MKS is a nice vehicle. I have just come to discover I am not a fan of front wheel drive. It's as simple as that. Tomorrow I'll give German engineering a try, and see how the Audi S5 compares to the British effort. It will be interesting.

For now the high-end option is a custom system from Bowers and Wilkins.

Dan
You have hit on one of the differences in owning a car in Florida versus Michigan. A rear wheel drive car, especially a performance oriented car, is not really your best choice here. That is why I always ordered the AWD BMW's and Audi's and why I had to go with a CTS AWD and not the CTS V. A nice car is not good if it is in the garage or worse in the weeds. Jim |

Top gear reviewed the Jaguar XF R 2 weeks ago, and they found it a fantastic car. They compared it to a BMW M5, and the jaguar, kept up pretty good with the M5, which can rev higher and has 2 more cylinders. In fact, around the lap, it was less than half a second slower than the M5 and much much more pleasant to drive...
Here's a Top Gear review of the XF btw YouTube - Jaguar XF btw, I think it looks absolutely gorgeous. Keep them spinning, Bert. Last edited by Basite; 07-21-2009 at 08:28 AM. |
