One very nice transaction- bought an MC252 locally. Made a cash deal and picked up the unit myself (brought a friend along). Smooth and easy.

I've been buying and selling on AudiogoN for years. I would have never have the systems I have today, 2 channel or HT without that site.

Those people that are offering on Audiogon new in the box never before opened items, are most of those legitimate do you think? I always wondered where they get those items from. I am getting closer to buy a C2300 and there is one on Audiogon for $4,500. If I can sell my MR7082 and MA6200, I will be just about there. Do you think $4,500 for a C2300 is a good price? I sure thought so. I tried the McIntosh upgrade offer but it looks like I would be better off selling it myself. Can one always trust the sellers feed back on Audiogon? If you don't know the person, is it always best to use PayPal?

Thanks,

Mike

Before you pull the trigger on Audigon at $4500 I would contact MasterLu and discuss the item. I think $4500 is too high "ON Audiogon" for a 2300, but if it is a local purchase that you can see the unit ahead of time you may pay a little more.
I have bought and sold many items on A-Gon, here are couple of my rules.
1) If it is an amount of money that you cannot afford to lose, you need to talk to the person and get comfortable with that individual. You can usually tell if the feedback is legit.
2) Local transactions are usually better and you do not have to worry about shipping damage.
3) US Postal Money Orders are a good way to go if you are not very comfortable about the transaction. Most illegitimate persons are too smart to fool around with Postal fraud.

That said, we all started with no feedback, and I have had very good luck and met some great people on A-Gon.

Jim,

Thank you for your tips. So far I have only bought one item from Audiogon and that was a MC402 amp. I wasn't to smart in my method of payment but all went well and I received a beautiful unit. Does MasterLU sell used equipment? When it comes time to buy, I would like to get a C2300 around a year old. I will probably have it for the next 10 to 15 years. Is there a way to tell by the serial number when the MAC manufacturing date was?

Thanks again for passing on your experience,

Mike

I think it is best if you PM MasterLu. He is gracious with his time and will make you aware of your options. There is no pressure to buy.

Also, what general area are you located. Are you able to work with your local McIntosh dealer?

I will defer to others here regarding serial numbers and approximate manufacturing dates. The consensus is that the lower the serial number the older the unit. If I remember correctly Rob C has indicated that this may not be true in all cases.

I live about 20 miles south of Lansing in Michigan. I did go to the McIntosh dealer in Ann Arbor. Very nice show rooms with knowledge staff. Trading in both MR 7082 and MA 6200, I still would still owe about $5,200. I don't think going the brand new route is for me. After this, I have my eye on a MCD500 and an MR85. That should give me incentive to keep going to work every day.

I will endeavor to sell the above mentioned pieces and then touch base with MasterLu to see what he might have available.

Thanks again Jim

I have a 10/10 pair of AQ Cheetah and a 9/10 Rotel HD tuner in transit via UPS from Audiogon this week. Both offers were pretty dang low, waited 2 weeks before submitting, surprisingly they were both accepted. The soft economy has contributed to me getting so many great Audiogon deals in 2009, kind of like a vulture. When asked if there were any flaws both sellers stood firmly by their ratings. Every Audiogon transaction is a roll of the dice, sooner or later I'm gonna roll snake eyes.
