First Stereophonic Demonstration
I was reading Roger Russell's History of McIntosh website, and came across some interesting information. I had thought that the advent of Stereo (two seperate audio channels) was developed in the 1950's when the first Stereophonic albums became available, and had probably been developed by RCA, culminating in their Living Stereo album releases. In fact, the very first Stereophonic demonstration was done 76 years ago in 1933.
In 1916, a young Brigham Young University graduate, Dr. Harvey Fletcher (Fletcher-Munson curves), became employed with Bell Laboratories. During his time with Bell, he developed the first stereophonic sound system. In 1933 Dr. Fletcher set up a demonstration of a live orchestra in the Hall of Music in Philadelphia, and transmitted two channel audio over General Telephone lines to Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. There it was reproduced before an audience, and was called auditory perspective dimension sound, which later came to be known as stereophonic sound. The stereo we enjoy today was born from the imagination of Dr. Harvery Fletcher 76 years ago. Now you know the rest of the story.
