MC30s?
Anyone using the MC30 amps?
Any info appreciated re: MC30s. I never had tube amps before. Tube pre, 'though. They are original as far as I know. |

Loggone,
Have you done any searching? There is no shortage of discussion, technical material, general information and pretty much anything else you could want to know regarding the McIntosh C30 amplifier. Last edited by 62caddy; 04-30-2015 at 09:58 AM. |

Don.......The McIntosh MC30 mono tube amplifier is a true classic. I owned a pair back in 1968 that I loved. The sound was liquid and detailed. I drove a pair of 102 dB efficient Altec Lansing Voice of the Theater speakers with the MC30's and they rocked the house.
You will want to do two things if you purchase the MC30's. First, if they are all original and have not been recapped, you will want them to be checked out by a good tech who has a Variac to apply power to the amps. The MC30's was manufactured from 1954 until 1962. At best they are at least 53 years old and could be as old as 61 years. The second thing, consider the efficiency of the speakers you plan to drive with the MC30 amps. Also consider the volume you most enjoy listeing to and keep this in mind when selecting a speaker. I would be looking for speakers in the 90+ decibel efficiency range. The MC30's are really great sounding power amps. You will enjoy them. I wish I had never sold my pair.

thank you guys.
I'm going to get some more info about these particular 30s. They sure look vintage! Attractively! For sure the variac and servicing before the party. When I spotted them, they completely absorbed me. |

Mike.......Looking at thMC30 schematic reminds me of what a simple and elegant design for an amplifier . Compare that schematic to nearly any modern day design and it becomes clear that more is not necessarily better.
