Wonderful music, playing, and sound.

Am I the only person who is listening to music lately?
Anyway, while he's obviously a contemporary composer, he doesn't eschew melodies altogether. |

Bach's "Goldberg Variations" by Vjkingur Olafsson streamed on Qobuz. Good listen, but not Glenn Gould.

James Sedares conducting the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in Randall Thompson's Symphony #1 and Morton Gould's Fall River Legend ballet score (Koch International Classics CD rip). Having another go at this now that I've reconfigured my primary audio system. Structurally, the Thompson symphony is a bit of a bumpy road composed of chunky blocks of music that remind me a little of Bruckner, though Thompson is far less stodgy--and, in places, far more lyrical--in execution. Re Fall River Legend, I imprinted on the composer's own RCA Living Stereo recording and prefer its vitality, though Sedares and the New Zealand ensemble deliver a more than creditable performance. Sonically, this recording is a feast of wide open spaces, ringing sonority, and dynamic punch characteristic of some other Koch productions (e.g., Bernard Herrmann's Symphony #1 [Sedares, Phoenix SO] and Jerome Moross' Symphony #1 [JoAnn Falletta, London SO]. A soundbather's paradise.

I had that one on a 2-channel reel-to-reel Angel tape when I was in college. It was a great favorite and a great demo.

Ormandy, Perlman, Philadelphia, Tchaikovsky............. what's not to like.
Just put into my digital playlist to compare to the vinyl. Perlman's list of violins is quite magnificent. He plays the Soil Stradivarius violin of 1714, formerly owned by Yehudi Menuhin and considered one of the finest violins made during Stradivari's "golden period." He also plays the Guarneri del Gesù 1743 'Sauret' and the Carlo Bergonzi 1740 'ex-Kreisler'.
