Audiophile Mistakes.....

I bought something sight unseen after hearing rave reviews here on AA. I still haven't figured out what everyone here was so excited about. For me it did nothing. It was a ........., better not say.

The biggest mistake I made cost me 5k euros.
It was a "high end" audiophile server.
The 2 units I got were defective.
Hopefully I got my money back and discovered the Squeeze Box Touch giving me a tremendous sound with my MDA1000.
The SB costs 300 euros.

I once purchased a SACD player that was rated "A" in Stereophile and had received rave reviews. I ordered it from my dealer, got it home and set it up. I listened for weeks waiting to see what all the fuss was about and became very disappointed. I sold it and bought the Oppo which is an excellent player. Lost a lot of $$$ on that deal.

External crossover is not a mistake. If you manage to find a good one, you can really improve your system. There are two main advantages - the bass drivers in your main speakers will have less excursion, therefore fewer breakup modes. They will sound cleaner. Your amp will be saved from having to amplify bass frequencies - often these have the lowest impedance and therefore the highest current demand. Pardon my ignorance, but how does an external x/over differ in its ultimate effects that you described compared to using the various speaker settings and subwoofer settings in the speaker setup in my MX150 where I set the x/over frequency of each speaker and of the subs?

I know that Ron C. uses an external crossover and an MX150, so there must be something that I am missing in my understanding.

ALSO -- what are some good brands of external crossovers?

My biggest errors have been those of omission. Did not believe in stand-alone phono stages and MC cartridges until I tried, first, the phono-preamp, and then, a good MC cartridge. What a HUGE difference. Then, I tried good ICs. Another ephiphany of sound. Thankfully, well back in the preious century.

I belong to a headphone forum and there was a video review done by the admin. He reviewed a headphone called the Thunderpants. This headphone is a slightly moded 175.00 headphone that he mods and resells for $700.00+. The reviewer gave the Thunderpants a rave review, and told the group that he is buying a pair.Because the admin/reviewer was so trusted and knowlegable in the field of headphone. And everyone knew that he has listened to headphone setups in the 5 figures, the entire group was chatting about this new killer headphone and they started a group buy. I was one of the first on the list. After doing some research to see what was actually being modded (new wooden ear pieces, leather and a few drill holes) I decided I would cancel my order. (which was almost 1000.00 once you added the nicer leather etc). A coulple of friends of mine kept there order in place. It took almost 2 months (after full payment) to get the headphones. I went to one of my friends for a listen and after a few minutes realized it was all a massive hype. Both my friends were very disappointed with the purchase.

If anyone's looking for a good deal on a pair of Thunderpants, I have a least 2 contacts for you. :0
