Zdzislaw Beksinski: Of Beauty And Nightmares
"I have quite simply been trying, from the very beginning, to paint beautiful paintings." Zdzislaw Beksinski (1929-2005) "Beauty" is undoubtedly in the eye (and perception) of the beholder, but, to me, at least (and I realize I am in the minority), beautiful art looks like this: Zdzislaw Beksinski is perhaps my favorite artist, period. And I discovered him less than a year ago. But what I saw then still haunts me to this day. I have always been into "dark", surreal and "fantastic" art (specially H. R. Giger) but Beksinski's style and technique is simply unparalleled. Nothing can quite evoke the same feelings of ethereal and oneiric atmosphere, nor present such cyclopean dreamscapes. A simple Google search will reveal more details, but his personal life almost seems to have been a living representation of his art: his wife died of a strange disease, his son (a famous radio host in Poland) committed suicide, and he was cowardly and savagely murdered in his own apartment over a matter of $100. I became so fascinated and enamored with his work that the very next day after I discovered him I bought this: His pieces were all untitled, but this one is commonly referred to as "The Horn Player". One of the very few prints he hand-signed. He hated the mainstream aspect of art, refused to attend most of his exhibitions, and is said to have been a recluse, mostly painting all day long while listening to classical music, sometimes 14 hours a day. He accepted to do very few limited editions, and even less in color. As far as I know he only did one giclée edition that was supposed to be of 175, but he was tragically murdered after he signed #30. "I react strongly to images that have no obvious answer to their mysteries. If there is a key to their construction, they are simply illustrations..." Thank you for posting these "pictures" and associated artist information.
I have never heard nor seen any of Zdzislaw Beksinski's work, but I will now seek out more information. |
