I just checked the specs on the D-07 versus the MCD-500. It looks like the difference in volume comes from the output levels.

Jim.......Balanced outputs are typically twice the voltage level of unbalanced outputs. I wonder why Esoteric chose to pad down the balanced output voltage levels.

Jim,

FWIW, please make sure you have level matched the gear exactly when listening for differences. Simply matching the volume number on the pre-amp will not guarantee matched levels. Mismatched levels, even as small as less than 1db have been shown to matter.

Good luck with the rest of the comparison.

Understood. Since I do not have both units connected at once I can only try to play the music at what I consider my "normal" volumes. I didn't check SPL on my MCD-500 before I disconnected the cables. I might check them on the D-07 before I hook the 50 back up.

The lower output voltage on the Esoteric via its XLR's requires me to raise the volume on my pre-amp.

Here is a quick pic. I set it on top of my C-1000 during this tryout period.

A you can see from the display it handles up to 192. I snapped this while I was playing a 176 file off the Olive 4HD.

I returned the D-07 demo unit this morning to the dealer. He and I are now discussing some of my options on matching transports and possible trades and dollars. I am leaning towards pulling the trigger on the units. I want to give myself a little time to think on it.

Good luck Jim. I'll be interested to see what direction you take with this one. A quick question: have you and/or your dealer considered using a a good but low cost universal transport (something like the Oppo BDP-83 SE which can output DSD to the DAC for SACDs as well)? At the very least it would be intersting to compare the Oppo with an Esoteric transport through the D-07. The D-07 has a reclocker on board for superior jitter reduction so that should make it compatible with lesser quality transports. Just a thought.

The DSD standard does not allow you to pass a digital signal unless your are sending it via a proprietary link. It must go Denon to Denon or Esoteric to Esoteric. The D-07 could not sync with the DSD signal from my MCD-500 as the 500 does only puts DSD out via analog output.
