My new K-01X is still waiting to be opened after more than two months, and with construction delays, it will probably be another month before mine sees the light of day! I'll just enjoy mine vicariously through you all...!

Well, I bit the bullet and I'm upgrading from the Esoteric K-01 to the K-01X Digital Player. I should receive it in a few weeks. There are several reasons I decided to make this upgrade. The ability to play DSD files up to 5.6 MHz and PCM files up to 384 kHz with 8 times oversampling, an increased D/A processing rate from 32 bit to 35 bit and a redesigned output buffer circuit based on the Grandioso.
I've spoken to a number of people who made this upgrade and all agree there is a substantial improvement over the K-01 with much better imaging and a more refined sound. I have always loved the sonic signature of the K-01, so this upgrade is really a no brainer. Both the K-01 and K-01X provide tremendous linearity, midrange musical density, detail and nuance, treble extension, bass impact and dynamics. I will eventually add the G-01 master clock, which will provide additional improvement in sound quality and realism. If anyone is interested in purchasing my K-01 (mint condition, less than two years old and very low transport hours), it's for sale in the AA Marketplace. One feature that I hadn't been trying with my K-01x has been using the digital inputs. I have always previously been a disc only person.
Now I can say I've tried my K-01x with my Mac on OS yosemite this week via USB and JRiver. My previous K-03 wasn't the best on usb as I understand that the older models could not use the external clock when running external digital source. I preferred disc playback. I tested my K-01x with external Rb clock. Wow! I have never been an advocate for non-disc based digital playback. But this new x generation player is a dramatic improvement for digital file playback. I'm impressed. I will later this weekend try some A-B with ripped CDs playback on Mac vs the internal drive.

Had the time to do a few A-B comparisons of the K-01x (with Rb clock) transport vs USB. This was from discs I ripped myself with the mac superdrive onto the internal ssd on the macbook. Files were streamed via usb, jriver, either at native 44.1 or upsampled to 352.8kHz.
There is certainly something quite magic about Esoteric's transport. I have had a few friends over with good ears and we have all agreed that the playback is best via the Esoteric transport. It's just got more body, depth, attack, image etc etc. Not to say the USB playback isn't good. It is very good. If I didn't have the original disc I probably would never really have objected. However, for absolute reference, we have found that the transport is the way to go. On both usb and native transport I have set up oversampling to 8Fs, SLY2 digital filter. The default USB setting is NOS, with no DF. The change of the USB settings made a huge improvement on my system. But not as good as the transport. Looks like I'll be playing discs most of the time for my critical listening but I'm also happy with the convenience and good performance of the streamed input.
