is the k-01 transport totally silent?
i know the k-03 makes a bit of a whirring noise.

My K03 made a slight whirring. My K01 is silent. I did not find the K03 objectionable.

you can only hear it on start-up and on the softest passages at 3am.
otherwise, it's only noticeable next time you load a cd.
i suppose one can live with it and save $7000

If you are spinning discs, definitely. If you want to use it as an outboard USB dac, there are some limitations. No DSD, can't use the latest Mac OS...maybe some other issues I can't remember.
