The OP asked if we connect our amp to our power conditioners and I thought I would say that yes I do. Was worried at first if this would be more than it could handle but I emailed McIntosh and they said no it would not. Since everything is plugged into the power conditioner, should I have a better power cord for it?

Yes....use your best power cord going from the wall to the power conditioner. You want to start off with the cleanest/best power from the very beginning of the chain.

+1. I have a Nordost Frey 2 cord from the wall into my QBase, and it makes a huge difference, even compared to what I thought were very good power cords. Interestingly, I could not tell hear an improvement when replacing stock cords between electronics and the QBase.

I'm a believer in power conditioners. However, if I owned a Constellation Hercules II mono or Dag Relentless I wouldn't use one. I would be sure to have the best current coming from the wall and a superb high current power cord.

It depends on the amp's power supply and current requirements. I would not place any device between these amps or amps like them.

I like Mac amps because they possess very fine power supplies and are very efficient. Therefore, I think they benefit from a really high quality power conditioner.

I use Niagara 5000's and dedicated 20 amp lines with no. 10 wire coming straight out of the fuse box with 20 amp breakers. The 5000's have 90 amp current reserviors.

I think virtually any source benefits from a high quality conditioner. However, the power cord must be of the same quality and the wall current as pure as possible.

Again, I like Mac sources because they have fine power supplies but are not overbuilt the way the really expensive gear is. Therefore I think they benefit greatly from a Niagara 7000 with individual isolation transformers. I use Dragon power cords for all main sources and pre. Also, for the wall cord which is the most important cord.

Recently AQ has had a massive price increase with the 5000 coming in at 5,000.00 and the 7000 at 9,500.00. The new Niagara 3000 (3,000.00) has all the features of the 5000 with a smaller current reservoir (55 amps). It received a superb review in the Dec issue of Stereophile.

Best

Charles, does that superb power cord with all the current carrying capability somehow supersede the Romex wiring in your walls? At the end of the day, all the talk about power and current carrying is between the fancy outlet, the super power cord and your gear is still dependent on the old adage of "the chain is only as strong as the weakest link".

Flipping the variables around in that equation, will necessarily yield the following conclusion. Romex wire is adequate for the 20 amp current carrying capability your electric panel is designed to give you. One can therefore also deduce that an anaconda hanging out the back of your amp far exceeds the capabilities of the rest of the chain.

That is simply not true; so we’ll agree to disagree.

Serge, excellent points. Can't refute a single thing you say. But my system is dead quiet at full volume and my background from which the music emerges and room are silent. I'm happy.

I think all on AA should read and pay attention to your points because I believe there to be a middle ground where most in our wonderful hobby wish to reside. You help us to achieve that middle ground and save us a lot of money that could be better spent.

Best

Acoustical treatment should always come first. It's like building a home for a family. A welcoming environment for the gear to fully open up and shine to its best potential. No point of having fancy cables and fancy gear if the room kills the great sound. To me that has always been the best money spent on audio. More so than gear itself except the speakers which are the most important purchase for the room.

I have three dedicated lines (same phase). Each of my mono Pass Labs amps are plugged directly into the wall (w/ Shunyata power cords). Everything else is plugged into my Shunyata PC which is plugged into the last dedicated line. Works well.
