Very surprising yes. Avid builds fabulous turntables.
I guess the market became so competitive with so many brands that not many companies have the means to be distributed everywhere on the planet.
The vinyl rebirth has created a highly challenging market and even long established and famous brands may have some trouble to stay in the run.

This is confusing... Maybe due to change from .co.uk to .com? Thanks KMC45.

Have you talked to Ivan? He often can help in getting what you need. Perhaps not on the trade end of things, but on finding the TT you want. Should be easy enough to sell your VPI here or on the on-line listing services. Likely do better than a trade doing so.

Not sure where the 'fiddly' part of the uni-pivot arms comes from. Use a uni-pivot just like any other TA. Cue up, move to the start point, cue down, listen to beautiful music.

Well it may just be me and my Lyra cartridge which I find has a hard time getting set up for proper azimuth alignment (and which says in the instructions that the arm should have rigid bearings). But apparently I'm not the only one since (a) VPI is now retrofitting its unipivot arms with a dual pivot to provide stability due to customer complaints and (b) VPI is now coming out with its first gimbal arm.

We've gotten a little off topic here folks - anyone able to give me a Magnify vs Universal comparison?

Call Geoff poor at poor’s audio in Illinois. That’s where I bought my rig and he seems to do a big turnover in ClearAudio. He’ll be glad to spend a few minutes with you. If you go this route, pm me your details and I’ll introduce you guys.

After suffering through my usual angst about audio purchases, and after talking to the dealer's turntable tech (rather than a salesman), I chose the Universal. He clearly was uncomfortable pushing anything, particularly considering the price, but at the end of the day he admitted that if it was him he'd get the Universal - particularly if I wanted to stop upgrading. So that sealed the deal - he will also be installing my cartridge. I'll post a review when I receive the turntable.
