I did not grow up using Vinyl, therefor I do not have any nostalgia. Vinyl is so appealing to me that I actually own records and enjoy the format. It's very appealing.

I hate terms as personal taste. Hifi means as close to live music as possible. Musicians are not going to play in a taste you want.
A good vinyl record will always sound more natural than what ever cd-player or dac.
High ress computer audio can come close to vinyl.
But .... a record player and phono amp that does this, costs a lot of money.
A year ago we listened to dac's like Meitner and Weiss. After that we listened to vinyl.
There was now discussion. Vinyl sounded much more natural. But we had listened to a Fat Bob, a new SME arm, a Jan Allaerts cartridge and a Pass Labs phono amp.
Don't believe me, I am just teaching every day acoustic instruments.

I have FLAC files of redbook CD that sound better than the same recording on vinyl, both audiophile grade vinyl cut from analog master tapes and from the original records that are 50 or more years old. I also have vinyl (same description mix) that sounds better than the FLAC files. I also have HiRez downloads that sound fantastic, better than anything else, but other HiRez downloads that are disappointing. So my conclusion is that there is no single one size fits all best recorded music source available at the current state of the art. Also, if we agree that "hifi means as close to live music as possible" we have a long way to go. Even the best systems fall short of the sound of live music.

I agree with Bill. In my experience, the mastering trumps the replay format.

You just wait til those new DIGITAL human ears are released! They make your old analog human ears sound sooooooo yesterday!

It seems to me that there are just so many variables to consider because every format has the potential to sound better or worse than the competing format. One system setup can deliver superior sounding vinyl over CD and the converse. Some vinyl or CDs or even HiRes files can be mastered correctly or poorly.

So glad we have unlimited options to choose our preferred flavour(s).

That's true some vinyl sounds terrible compared to others, the first time I heard a dsd format songI was blown away, then I heard others that just sounded like a cd

. Vinyl versus digital......the endless conversation. .

What excites YOU is all that matters. Make yourself happy. No one else really gives a hoot. Just sayin'. .

Oh! I'm a musician, too. I stayed at a Motel 6 last night. The Holiday Inn Express was full. .

+1

A while back I was surprised to find a vinyl in my collection that didn't sound as good as the CD. This wasn't because of static or pops, it sounded like a weaker, rough mastering.
