How do I do this?

Hi guys, I have a question. What I want to do is to compare several music samples from LP. One of my curiosities is that I have a 33rpm version and a 45 rpm version of the same music. To my ears they sound the same. (Actually if I had to pick one it would be the 33 rpm version.) Is there some way of recording these as hi-res digital files? My Pre-Amp has 'pre-outs' and 'rec-outs'. (RCA connections). Is there some way to use these to record what I am playing.

Andrei - you would have to have some type of analog to digital converter that would link the output of your analog setup and then convert it to a USB output that would in turn go into a computer with some sort of vinyl ripping software such as Pure Vinyl or Vinyl Studio. I use Vinyl Studio with an NAD PP4 into a MacBook pro in order to rip vinyl into iTunes so I can play files in my car. Michael Fremer reviewed the NAD a/d/converter some time ago and gave it a really favorable review, although I'm sure there are better components out there, but for use for files in the car it's great.

I don't fully get what you're trying to do.
Compare different vinyl records?
Or just record vinyl to digital?
Or are you just trying to record them to digital to compare them in some way?

You shouldn't convert vinyl to digital to look at sound quality of the two copies.

By the way I do buy many copies of the same title record. As the saying goes, no two are alike either from mastering, pressing plants or condition over the years.
I have two tables set up identical, so I can play side by side the same title. If you do it like this you will definitely hear the changes in mastering, surface noise and or just the quality of the pressing.

Thanks audioguy. I was actually wondering if it could be done without an ADC.
As a matter of interest I have a second use for this. I am trialing different bearings for the venerable Technics SL1200. I also want to play the same tracks with the different bearing. I am confident my ears will tell me if there is a difference but would prefer something a little more objective.

There are several digital recorders available on the market, although the majority are advertised for commercial use. Sony makes the R-500. Tascam makes the DA-88. These represent a small portion of the equipment available and both can record on multiple channels. Typically commercial equipment has different connectors than those on home audio systems, so you would most likely have to buy adters.

Using one of these you can record from any connectable equipment including computers. Also,, many machines are available as portable models... So go to a friends house and RIP his entire record collection. The HDDs on these are replaceable/upgrade able and in some cases stackable as well.
