I read a Home Theater review of Panasonic's flagship 4K player, and in that review (published 7/19) the author noted that physical media accounted for more than 59% of video sales, and 4K Blu-ray accounted for 13% of total Blu-ray sales, a 3% uptick from the previous year. Those stats may be lower now, I guess, but it leads me to think physical media will be around a bit longer.
I have no interest in streaming and am not a big movie person, and thus will continue with discs until no longer available. I have simple tastes, I'm already oversaturated by the culture, so I'll stay with my plan as long as possible. I also read a NY Post article on the HBO Max/Warner thing which said the Wonder Woman 1984 HBO Max release is for a month, then the movie continues in theaters. I don't have the article in front of me, it was yesterday's or Thursday's paper.

According to a study held in June 2020, just 14 percent of adults said that they strongly preferred seeing a movie for the first time in a theater, and 36 percent said that they would much rather stream the film at home than visit a cinema. Preferences for watching a new release in a cinema instead of via a streaming service in the United States changed significantly between 2018 and 2020, signaling a shift in consumer behavior and potentially a risk for movie theaters in the country. Also important to note is the effect of the coronavirus on consumer confidence. There was a drop in the share of movie fans willing to visit cinemas between March and June 2020, likely the result of consumers fearing the risk of infection and feeling more comfortable viewing movies in the safety of their own home.

36 and 14 -- what about the other 50%?
I'm not in either of those two categories. |

I presume Oppo bailed out of their fantastic Blu-ray players not because the small audiophile group was purchasing them but because of the 80+% drop in DVD sales over the years. They knew better than to keep fighting the tide of change. Audiophile community is not a serious enough market for what was probably a pet project for them in the US anyway.

The only time I ever go see a movie in the cinema is if it's something that I can't wait for like a Star Wars movie or Avengers Endgame.......other than that, I wait and watch at home in the theater. One of these days I need to get around to posting pics etc. of my theater build.

I’m more than Ok with the 65” OLED to be quite honest. It was fun when the kids were of the age that we would watch all the action movies together in the theater room but these days they have their own lives and a family. Perhaps I’ll get back into it with the grandkids someday. I do understand the allure and the fun aspect of a great home theater though.
