Great question! If anyone could elaborate on the differences between the two amps that would also be helpful to lurkers like me.

I'm sure the 1.2k is an amazing unit unfortunately, I have not heard them, but I do have a pair of 1.25k's running my ML Renaissance's. Love the match.

I bought my 1.2's when the 601's came out. Although the 601 was a much newer design, I was told I was told the 1.2 would "smoke" it. I kept them for about 5-6 years. I have no criticism of its presentation. However, it is the old Mac SS technology brought to its most refined state. This technology dates back to the MC1000, MC1201, and MC501 mono amps. These are superb amps. The 1.2KW is the "king" of them.

Beginning with the MC601 mono, the design is updated including the new Thermal Trak output transistor. I have made so many changes to my system I can't compare them, except to say the difference is not "night and day" by any stretch. The 1.25KW is slightly smoother and more refined compared to an already smooth refined SS amp. I've owned 3 1.25KW's for about 3-4 years. It's the best SS Mac amp, exception being the MC2KW which is an altogether different animal. I briefly considered a pair before buying the MC35000MKII. But it is a 15-year-old design with the old binding posts. I'm passing on the 2KW's. According to my source at Mac, the 1.25KW is just as good if not better for much less money. Hope this helps.

Best

Charles

Good post Charles.

The 1.25's are "voiced" differently than other modern McIntosh solid state offerings. Although a bit out my my league, lots of um-mph in the low end and smoothness above.

Not having heard the 1.2's, it is my understanding the voicing is similar to the 1.25's. I believe too, there were two versions of the 1.2's. I too hope this is of some help to peacefulcargo.

Enjoy the Sounds,

John
