Really this is purpose built for DACs that don't have USB inputs. And they put themselves in the sweet spot for pricing (>HiFace <BADA). This should prove to be a very promising product for those of us using "legacy" (albeit uber) DACs.

So if one doesn't plan on storing their music collection on an external drive connected to the network or stored on the BDP2's internal drive for example and one doesn't need an external DAC what are the reasons for getting say the BDP2 rather than this? I was thinking of getting the BDP2 some point this year to play high res FLAC files and I would be sending the signal to my Lexicon MC-12 via AES/EBU, would the BUC1 serve the same purpose?

This is not a player. It is a(n elaborate) USB->SPDIF converter. Nothing more.

You could just go straight to the Lexicon, or get another DAC in the chain that may perform better for 2-channel.

Ah ok so that's what I was missing. So if I have software in my PC that plays FLAC, AAC, DSD, etc. I can use this to interface to my Lexicon. If I don't have software in my computer to play the files then that's where the BDP2 comes in, is that right?

Yes unless you have HDMI... Then you could go that way (i dont recall if your lex has hdmi though). Something like a BDP2 can be put just about anywhere in the chain.

HDMI IMHO has worse jitter than coax Toslink and USB

He'll have more jitter but it probably won't be recognizable going through the Lexicon. Simply a matter of convenience. Plus, I'd take the HDMI output direct off the Intel chipset of a motherboard instead of the SPDIF out through a Realtek chip any day of the week if using a Laptop or PC.
