Grand gala opening of the new Mariinsky II Theatre in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Broadcasted live on May 2, 2013

Camille Saint-Saëns' Le cygne (1886), or The Swan, was one of his most popular pieces of music during the span of his life, although the general public was not aware that it was actually just a part of a larger suite, at the time. The Swan is actually the 13th movement of a suite called The Carnival of the Animals (1886), or the Grande Fantasie Zoologique, as Saint-Saëns referred to it.

It was intended to be a "fun" piece, to satisfy the composer's mischievous wit. Saint-Saëns, throughout his teaching and compositional career, enjoyed writing or improvising parody pieces that made fun of a certain composition or a musical style. At the École Niedermeyer, where he taught some of France's brightest young musicians, he would often escape from the boring lessons by leading the students in parodies of this type.

Saint-Saëns did not allow for The Carnival of the Animals to be published during his life, because he feared that it would take precedence over his more serious works. The work was eventually published, though, after the composer's death, by order of his last will and testament.

Saint-Saens - Symphony no. 3 - "Organ" - Finale, performed by the Auckland Symphony Orchestra conducted by Peter Thomas, with Timothy Noon on the Organ.
From the concert "Organ Symphony" recorded November 2012 at the Auckland Town Hall.

Holy Mother of Organ....

HIDDEN BEHIND the beautiful 1911 façade is an array of thousands of pipes, dozens of bellows, and a network of sophisticated wiring and technology. The 2010 Orgelbau Klais organ at the Auckland Town Hall (303 Queen Street, Auckland, New Zealand) has gained a reputation as one of the world’s finest concert hall instruments, a reputation endorsed by leading international organists.

Widor's Toccata - or - Widor's 5th Symphony in F - Movement V - Toccata

Full Symphony - http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list... The fifth and final movement-often simply Toccata-of Charles-Marie Widor's Fifth Symphony for Organ in F Major, the very famous Toccata. The organist is Olivier Latry, the titular organist (one of three) at Notre Dame de Paris.

Des Grande Orgue du Notre Dame de Paris, essentially built by Aristide Cavaille-Coll in 1867, currently has 108 stops, 153 ranks , an electrified action with a 5-manual console, and approximately 7,900 pipes.

Notre Dame organ
The pipe organ is the largest in France and is Notre-Dame Cathedral's most important objects. It has five keyboards and approximately 8,000 pipes. Prior to the fire, every Sunday afternoon, the organ could be played by any and all who wish to do so, however the waiting list was almost two to three years long.

Wolfgang Van Halen.

“As my pop continued to struggle with various health issues, I was imagining what my life would be like without him and how terribly I’d miss him. While the song is incredibly personal, I think anyone can relate to the idea of having a profound loss in their life. I never intended ‘Distance’ to be the very first piece of music people would hear from me, but I also thought my father would be here to celebrate its release. This is for him. I love and miss you, Pop.” - WVH

Proceeds from “Distance” will be donated to Pop’s favorite charity, Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation
