Dan, darn it, now I have R2R lust.

I heard a R2R recently with top notch components including the large Magicos. The sound quality was just amazing. The dynamic range was to die for.

This Ayre QA9 is the modern days equivalent. Can record any analogue source e.g vinyl and create a 24bit / 192kHz file that you can then load in your media server.

I think I have to look into this and the ps audio. I used to do a lot of mix tapes, first on reel-to-reel and then cassette, but haven't had tape in my system for years. Now mix tapes have been replaced by playlists on the server or iPod. Much easier than tapes, but doesn't help much with my vinyl.

These work horses are still important and still making fabulous music.

I have two reel to reel tape machines. The Revox B77 Mk II is a half track recorder. The Akai GX-636 is a quarter track recorder. Both are excellent machines in like new mint condition. I even have the original wired remote controls for both tape machines. Yep, I'm a tape head.

I'd still like to relieve you of that Revox machine Dan!

When I look at a beautiful reel to reel tape recorder it is like time travel for me. I am instantly taken back to the 1960's when I had my very first tape machine, an Akai X-165D reel to reel with Cross Field heads. As the years came and went I owned a TEAC 4300, then a Revox A77, and now the Akai GX-636 and Revox B77 Mk II.

I have also had years of enjoyment form cassette tape starting with a Kenwood KX-1030, then a Nakamichi 480, a Nakamichi BX-300, and a Nakamichi CR-7A. The CR-7A was the only cassette deck I owned that approached the performance level of reel to reel. It was very good.

Tape machines are great fun. Like I said before, they are nostalgic and offer us a glimpse into audio days gone by. Although reel to reel recorders may be a bit long in the tooth and don't offer the immediate indexing capabilities of current digital devices, there is just something about them that is endearing. Whether I am using my machines or not, I love seeing them, reflecting upon their beauty, and remembering their place in the grand scheme of audio history.

Dan... I agree completely; my first reel to reel was a Teac 1250. Then came a Teac A4010, followed by a Tandberg TD20A. My all time favorite was/is the Technics RS1500US half track. I intend to put my new Technics 1500 into use on my next visit to the Cape.

I currently have four R2R tape decks.
