It should be placed downstream near the streamer, if possible.

I really recommend a Shunyata Ethernet cable. Even the entry level Venom is considerably better sounding than any of the competitive cables I tested, including AQ.

The minimal length for Shunyata Ethernet cables is 1.5M for technical but important reasons (1.5M is the minimal length to mitigate the impact of reflections in the signal; the impact of this is audible).

If you can afford Delta or better, I'd recommend that as they have the sonically superior Telegartner connectors.

I use an extender to get an Ethernet connection close to my system. My audio guy brought an EtherRegen over for me to try. I did a bit of reading... had good reviews. I put it in close to my music server. Since I was amid multiple upgrades and breakin, i never bothered to Evaluate its impact. It was so cheap compared to an interconnect, I just had him throw it on the bill.

My audio guy had a client buy a $3,500 audio wifi router (?) that he raved about. But I have my hands full of big upgrades to be doing second tier fiddling. Until my system settles down from all the upgrade churn, I’ll leave this until later.

I finally got one of these, I haven't done any testing yet though. I did notice that the unit is pretty warm, is this normal?

yes, that's normal. I've had mine for a couple foyers and it's always run quite warm but with no problems.

Mine runs warm, too, but not hot.

The Uptone Audio LPS-1.2 power supply for the EtherREGEN (ER), on the other hand, runs pretty damn hot, and now...mine will only power my Sonore OpticalModule at 7V, but not the ER at 9V. I'm attributing this to the LPS-1.2 is slowly dying from overheating, and at some point, will totally give up the ghost, as my older LPS-1.0 did last fall. Unfortunately, UpTone cannot repair these as they can't get the HP Altera FPGAs as HP has these Alteras on "indefinite hold". So....I have a feeling I'm going to have two dead UpTone LPS-series power supplies here pretty soon.

Gonna piggyback on this thread to ask an upgrade question!

I've had my EtherREGEN in the system for several months in more-or-less of a "stock" configuration: using the included PS, no external clock, AQ Cinnamon ethernet cable coming into the ER from my router and AQ Cinnamon going out to my Aries G1 streamer. Looking specifically to @Puma_Cat but anyone please chime in, what might be the biggest bang-for-buck improvements to my ER at this stage, and in what order? For instance, should I upgrade my ethernet out to streamer before adding a clock or LPS, that sort of thing. While eventually I expect I'll trick the whole thing out, I'm inclined to place larger spend on other electronics first, such as swapping my Furman PC out for a Denali.

1st: Better Ethernet cable. My reco is Shunyata Venom-X or if you have funds to go higher up the chain, then Alpha, Sigma or Omega Ethers, depending on your budget.

2nd: Better clock: Get the AfterDark clock for about ~$550 or so (I forgot the exact price). Connect it to the clock port of your EtherREGEN. This will make a BIG difference. The AfterDark Master Clock brought a big improvement to the sound quality of my digital streaming set-up. Like...a BIG improvement.

3rd: Get the AfterDark linear power supply for powering the AfterDark clock *and* your EtherREGEN. They're only ~$275 and they're also really excellent. In fact, I'm going replace the Keces P3 that powers my SOtM SMS-200 UltraNeo with another AfterDark LPS, because the AfterDark LPS just flat smokes it with respect to sound quality. And it's cheaper at $275.

Also, the Denali will bring a significant improvement over the Furman. Be sure to use a good PC for it, minimally Shunyata Delta XC, but notably better with an Alpha or Sigma XC (this makes a big difference because the higher-spec PC provides more charge for the QR/BB device in Denali). Once you get the Denali, be sure to connect a good quality ground cable from the ground terminal on the EtherREGEN to the the GP-NR terminal on your Denali. This also provide a notable increase in audio quality.

Hope this helps...

That helps a LOT, thank you for the suggestions! I have a few questions as follow-up:
  1. I noticed you didn't list the Delta option among the Shunyata ethernet line, any reason why I should pass it over? I feel the step to Venom would immediately put myself in "shoulda gone higher" territory, so I suppose I'm looking toward the Alpha...
  2. That AfterDark LPS is really tempting (as is the Uptone JS-2), but I remember reading that it's poor form to power both the ER and its clock from the same LPS unit because the external clock port is on the other side of the ER "moat", thereby circumventing the isolation effect of the moat. Thoughts on that notion?
  3. For that same isolation reason, I don't have the ER plugged into the Furman with the rest of my downstream system, but instead I've got it plugged direct to wall on a separate circuit -- I was hoping to someday pick up one of those 2-plug Hydra PCs or something similar to use it with. Are these concerns now considered unfounded, because I'd much rather have the ER powered through the Furman (and eventually the Denali).
