Hydrogen masers (note maser, not master) are interesting, expensive and hardly relevant as in key areas, the BVA performs better.
Active hydrogen maser cost maybe $200k, passive maser rather less but needs a separate master clock to inject the required frequency. Last edited by custodian; 09-08-2014 at 06:18 PM. |

I think Ivan should do all a favor and carry/sell/distribute the bva master clock for us! :-)

What my considerations were: PROS: 1.slightly better than stanford's noise, antelopes 10 m rubidium core used is not up to the level of stanfords. 2.runs off external 12v(minimum) which is easy to subsitute for a good low noise psu, In 1) above, swtching supplies was not desired at all.****** Phase noise is shown to be directly related a proportional to psu noise*******. Further above units use higer voltages, which is very has to get a ultra noise noise psu at 24v and at higher power. The lowest phase noise unit with a crappy switching psu will have more jitter than a lesser oscillator with a graeat psu. I like the limitless possiblities to easily tuning the sound by way of different power supplies if not satisfied with the tone and sonics subjectively. Objectively, the specs, phase noise is superior alraedy. Will i like it? For my experience with a dcs clock, it objectively sounds better, but did find that on lesser quality recordings, sound cab be thinner and brighter as detail, seperation and resolution improves. 3. Unit doesnt not run so hot, the miniture rubidium generates much less heat, maybe means longer life span. Hot running rubidium module has a finite lifespan consider heat will need to be looked at as i will leave it powered 24/7. 4.built in frequency amplifier that is 10dbm, can be set higher by factory i believe. Concerns were that using different digital cables, higher impendence of rthe cable possib,y cause a lower voltage and not lock. My set, esoteric requires 0.5v sine wave minimum at 50ohms, a 75ohm cable will cause this to drop below 0.5v and risk low signal not locking. Custodian reports he did not have issues in his trials, but with dcs. A seperate frequency amplifier can be purchased thou. CONS: 1.Small portable unit so alumiium casing not sturdy or heavy to my liking. 2.50ohm output impedence but can be requested to be set to 75ohms. I didnt really understand or know how impendence will affect the sonics, but clear i will be using audiophile digital cables whcih may not even be 75 ohms to start. There are industrial adaptors to convert/match 50 ohm to 75ohm or vice versa. 3.Sma connector need a adaptor to bnc, easily bought at $10 4.If ever not needed, industry engineers / lab / radar etc fanatics will be interested. This is a bigger market than trying to unload a audiophile unit. The main condsideration was still the lowest phase noise at 1hz for the money obtainable |

You can probably order a custom 24V PSU from Teddy Pardo if needed.
Impedance mismatch (50 vs 75 Ohm output; 'audiophile' digital cables that rarely really are 75 Ohm ...) will always introduce reflections. The effect of those will be dependent (among other things) on the return loss of the clock design and receiver/PLL design of the receiving unit (clock or DAC) - both are beyound our control. I wouldn't knock the SRS Perf 10 design, only because of type of PSU it uses. For one, as Teddy Pardo and others have demonstrated in their designs, SMPS generated noise can be filtered out by regulators, so that the performance of such PSU is not worse than linear transformer based PSU. Secondly, it seems that the internal SMPS in the Perf 10 can be easily baypassed: As you can see, there is the Speakeon power connector at the back of SRS Perf10. All you have to do is to fabricate the right cable. Antelope uses similar arrangement in their 10M clock. Here is a close up I made when I had the Antelope clock: On the left you can see a Speakeon power connector (same as the one used on SRS model - may be a studio standard, not sure), on the right - SMPS. Another advantage of the Perf10 clock is that it has the correct, 75 Ohm output impedance. Plus the price is right. AND it is available. Last edited by Elberoth; 09-09-2014 at 06:03 PM. |

Would it be best to get the best digital cable over the power cord or interconnect. Would the impact of a good digital 75ohm cable contibute more to the improvement of sonic above the pc or ic's since it impacts the sound of the clock.

Just to update the story. Oscilloquarts, Switzerland, who produced the BVA clock have been acquired recently and in the rationalisation of the product range, they no longer offer a BVA clock. the only frequency standard they now offer is a caesium clock.
That is a great pity because it seems to me that a BVA device is capable of producing better digital sound than rubidium. |
