Once you have your particular cartridge all dialed in, do you ever still experiment with different load settings?

Ivan.......Yes I do. Since it is so easily done with the remote control from the listening sweet spot on the McIntosh C2300 and the C1000C/P, I will try raising or lowering the loading resistance while listening. The flexibility of these two preamps is fantastic. If I had to get up, turn the system off to flip dip switches or remove a cover to relocate jumpers, I would probably set it and forget it.

When you change loading it changes loudness right? How do you compensate accurately?

Dan, also c500 has that flexibility option with remote control.

from 500ohm to 1000ohm load does not change much the loudness, I think about 1db difference I am noticing

What is interesting when I use 8ohm tap speakers to amplifier I like the 500ohm load on my pre-amp, when I use 4ohm tap I like 1000ohm load.

IIRC when you're at the correct loading, you'll halve output. (That was a big issue yesteryear with phono stages!) It's a matter of controlling the cartridge's electrical loading and mechanical resonance. I talked about it a bit in the Doshi phono stage review (you'll have to scroll down a little).
