Default Anyone into drag racing?

Here's another one for you. There must be a few drag racers here.
Spent a lot of weekends in my early twenties at the drag strip. My buddies father had a SS/JA Camaro. Record holder for a few years. NHRA Div. 5 champ 3 yrs in a row. Great experience, did a lot of travelling all over the western states and Canada. You can't really call yourself a gearhead if you haven't stood in the pits when they fire up a 6000 hp nitro car.
A Ferrari may be music to your ears but a top fuel dragster punches you in the gut and invades your senses like nothing else!

Have been an NHRA fan since my teens, which is like 50 years ago. It's still my preferred style of auto racing. Taken a few trips down the 1/4 mile in my 67 Chevy SS396 and my 69 Z28. ESPN2 usually has good NHRA coverage on Sunday nights.

Done a lot of watching the drags and a lot of driving at the strips as well. I still enjoy it, even after all these years.

A run from some years ago at a local strip:

Woodburn #2 - YouTube

I'm in the video starting at around 27 seconds and my opponent's run ends abruptly at around 46 seconds.

My runs continue, though.

And I still have the silver beastie.

Unless you have some pretty serious horsepower I don't know how one would loose control like that unless they had some sort of mechanical failure. Good thing you got the hole-shot otherwise he may have collected you on his way to the wall.

Oh, he had HP and some torque as well...it's a C5 Z06 with the 6 spd manual. Some of my friends noted he lost traction when he hit second gear and instead of backing out of it, he tried to drive through it. He hit the wall on his side of the track, it turned his passenger side front wheel under the car and it immediately made a u-turn over to my side of the track.

I had the advantage of more HP and torque than he did plus a few runs under my belt so my R/T was was improving.

Even so, it was weird to see that black thing flash across the track behind me.

Here's the aftermath...a picture I took after the run:

Like Jack I've been a fan / participant since I was a kid. Fond memories of Grump, Ronnie Sox, Dick Landy, etc back in the day.

I ran a '86 Monte Carlo (Heavy Eliminator, low 10 sec car) in Div 1 (Maple Grove, Cecil, Atco, Englishtown) from 2001-2006.

IMO ever since Connie Kalita lost his son @ Englishtown a few years back and the fuel cars were restricted to 1000' passes the sport has taken a step backwards.

Since 1977 used to run at the fair grounds in socal and orange county, and junior events before irwindale was closed.

Drove a 64 Dodge Dart running in modified comp, 340 punched to 426 yeilding 650hp at 6200 rpm and 550 tq 4700 at the crank .

Sill have the car in fact just needs a repaint and body redo. Has been subframed and better brakes and custom suspension.

Also I have all new trim and interior to stuff back in too.
