I've decided to remove the Bryston 10B entirely, and use the Velodyne SMS-1 bass manager to set the low-pass crossover to the subs. I've been reluctant to use the SMS-1 for this because it requires a video monitor, and there are so many parameters that can be set, but a careful reading of the manual suggests I need go no deeper than adjusting the crossover then letting the SMS-1 run in auto mode to do the rest of the setup from its acoustic measurements. Given the LS50s are running full range, I want to creep up to the steep rolloff point to reduce overlap, so I'll start at 50 Hz and leave the slope at the default 24 dB/octave of the SMS-1.

Removing the Bryston 10B and using the Velodyne SMS-1 bass manager to low-pass to the subs below 50 Hz restored the Ayre sound and simulates well a high-quality full-range setup.

Breaking KX-5 VX-5 link
Bryston makes great stuff, I used their Headphone amp for years and 3B-ST for 16 years, but putting anything in between two Ayre 5 series components is madness!

Although I'm happy using 40 Hz low-pass with 24db/octave slope with KEF Ref 1s and a pair of Velodyne HGS-10s with SMS-1 room correction, I still ask if there is no high-pass filter that could be inserted a KX-5/20 and VX-5/20.

Would a Marchand passive fully-balanced 24 dB/octave 80 Hz filter do no harm inserted between a KX-5/20 and VX-5/20? My understanding is less than complete, but I think the goal is maintaining zero feedback. Would passive do that?

I've now inserted a Marchand fully balanced 80 Hz 24 dB/octave filter between my KX-5/20 and VX-5/20 with no harm to the Ayre sound that I perceive.

After more careful listening I noticed a subtle loss in the sense of space and detail. I removed the high-pass filtering, so there's nothing between the KX-5 and VX-5. Although I'm using four subs with 4th order low-pass at 80 Hz, the KEF Ref 1s seem to have in-room extension to just below 30 Hz before rolling off sharply. I was surprised they could go that low. For the music I most enjoy, baroque and classical chamber and jazz, the subs are not needed.
