I have not heard the E1's, they were not ready at last years RMAF.

Jim
I agree...I would not be concerned about them except in the largest of rooms. They do not play like standmounts at all, and are certainly of the largest "standmounts" I've seen.

Thanks Joost,

My room is almost a square. It is a dedicated room, and although seems squares are not the best, it sounds quite well with different speakers Ive tried, given size. Size is 5,45 X 5,35 meters (so like 17,8 X 17,5).

With the 800Ds I sat aprox 10 feet away from them and theybwere some 8,5 feet away from each other. There was plenty of room to the sides and over 3,5 feet to the back wall.

They played fine. Took me a while to find the best position. Kept moving them back and forth. But at the end I think I got it. I liked the sound. In my room, to my ears and with my music, it sounded big, sweet, powerful. With time I noticed I kept tweeking to get more detail and faster, more articulated bass. I think at the end they sounded very good. In terms of detail I thought they were very detailed (compared to others Inhave tried here).... Until I tried the TADs E1....

In terms of Bass, it was big and powerfull. Somewaht adicting. But also a bit slow and heavy. but Inguess tha is a bit in the DNA of the box, at least for my experience.

Image and soundstage, excellent. Overall a very good box for that price range.

The E1 is a different box. Much more detail, more transparent, faster. Even better image. More neutral all over the range. Bass way faster and articulated, although "smaller" and less powerfull (but it is big still). To me a very good improvement over the 800s. I hear much more "music" and much more clear what the artits are trying to show, be it a soloist or a conductor or an orchestra. Inner detail is fantastic, overall presentation deep nad wide with lots of air.

In brief the 800 is a great box. The E1 is well worth the extra 6000 euros it costs in europe over the 800, (actually I think at these levels what I have seen is much less of an improvement for that kind of money). I have tried boxes costing over 3 times as much and altough they were better than the 800 s, the improvement would not justify the extra cost (at least to my ears and in my room/set up/music). But with the E1 is totally the other way around.

Now the only thing tha keeps me from siging off to the E1s, are the CR1s I am trying to listen but havent been able still. If thenprice/performance improvement is the same as it was with the E1s I would not like to miss them. Although design is si different I am not surenwaht to expect.

Thanks Jim. There seems to be an agreement on the size of my room is ok. I play almost all classical. Not worried about chamber or solos. Sure the cr1 will be great there better than any other chice, a bit more concer on big orchestral pieces like simphonies or concertos.

Playing around with them. How much do you toe in these speakers? Seems so far, much more than the usual with other brands? Anyone else experienced this?

Eeli,

I run my cr1's in a similarly sized room although it is narrower - 4m x 10m (2.7m height). I had to spend a bit of effort getting them setup without them exciting too many room modes, so I believe they will work in rooms much larger.

The bass is phenomenal, flat to 30hz and sounds 'huge' as you put it.

I really recommend you try the cr1 (or r1) with the beryllium tweeter + midrange unit as I have heard this is a different beast than the unit in the e1. The CST drive unit is the best I have heard period.

Re toe-in, tad recommends the speakers oriented directly to the listener, and the distance between the speakers to be slightly less than the distance from speaker to listener.

Where in EU are you located?

Thanks Joost, I'm in Spain. And the dealer for TAD here happens to be my long term "provider" so I am hoping to get a chance to listen to the CR1s. For what you and all here says, should be more than ok in my room and Inshould not miss it before making a decission. Never thought I would potentiallynbuy a monitor... Although this is a 0,6 meters high and almost half a meter deep. So like a small floorstander. Roomwise, actually yours is bigger than mine by 10 sqm so...

I have had the E1s for a couple of weeks now on trial. Will see ifndealer can get his hands on a CR1. Nt sure what I will do in the meantime, cos by now it is either the E1 or CR1 if proven better. The 800s as good as they are, are not coming back I am afraid.

Will try more with toe-in. So far seems best results I get them whe axis cross just in front of my ears by a little. That is far more than the usual. Will keep on trying. Fun stuff.

Aside from looking a little odd, nothing wrong with cross firing coax speakers...as long as it sounds good.

Ivan: did you ever decide on electronics for mating to your TADs?

Very cool, Ivan. Which vtl are you thinking about. I recently heard the mb450 mkiii monos. They had incredible 3-dimensionality that I have not heard before.
