How much time?

How much time have you spent ripping CDs to your server, guesstimate?

Would you consider a service if it was easy and not too expensive?

1) Most of my media is acquired in a "soft" form already
2) I can rip a CD with 99.99% accuracy and FLAC it every 5-7 minutes

No way am I paying a "service" for this "feature."

Now, needing more hdd's? Yes.... 2.3TB only goes so far!

I've done my collection twice. Takes a while, but not too bad.

I like doing it. I add disc as I get them, then remove the ones I find out I do not like.

Ripping CD's to my MS750 took quite some time. I was a ripping fool, and stayed with it until I had all 800+ CD's loaded. Now I load the discs as they come to the house. Since I also have the MCD500, I spent time listening to music the entire time I was ripping, so it wasn't too bad. Getting up and down from my seat every 4 minutes or so became a chore. It took about two weeks of serious ripping.

Let's say you don't already have a music server and you are starting from scratch with hardware and software. Would you use a service that provides you with the hardware, software & ripping service (1 year) for a reasonable price? All you have to do is plug it in, take a couple of simple steps to setup and you're on your way to enjoying all your CDs at full resolution. The service would also keep a backup copy for you incase you need it. Would that attract you?

No when I added the Olive I could have used their service but prefer to do it myself.

DJ.......I agree with Jim. I can do the ripping, and the backup myself. I would not wish to ship my CD collection to some unknown group of individauls to handle, and do who knows what with the discs while in their possession. Sounds like a great way to build a huge, free library for themselves.

I believe that on this forum, there are a lot of "I'll figure it out myself'ers."

Me included.

I won't go as far as building my own amp/speakers, but my computers, networks, and ripping mechanisms.... yes.

I spent a few months ripping my collection, plus a few weeks ripping chunks of my father's collection. Roughly 2500 discs, 29,934 tracks, all in Apple Lossless via iTunes.

I am lucky enough to work from home so I set up iTunes to automatically rip and then eject discs, so I just fed it discs as I worked. I spent a half-hour or so at the end of each day cleaning up titles and artwork, though this was mostly to get things the way I wanted... e.g., changing artist names to "Last, First", merging album titles like "The Wall (Disc 1)" and "The Wall (Disc 2)" to both be "The Wall", etc.

I cannot stress enough the need to back up your music library. My harddrive died a year ago and I had to re-rip everything from scratch. Not nearly as much fun the second time around.
