Default SonoS Question

I have set up my SonoS unit so that I am able to access the music library on my MS-300. This is transmitted from my 2- channel room to the room where my whole house music system is located.

Today I needed to stay upstairs as I have some contractors working outside so I figured I would listen via the speakers in my den. I turned on my whole house system, grabbed my iPhone and selected an album, hit play and the music started. My question, how did this happen when both the MS-300 and MCD-500 are in standby mode. (just the red lights showing). I hadn't even selected the optical output on the 500 which is where the SonoS gets its feed. Magic!!!

Jim.......The MS300 is essentially always on, the hard drive is always spinning. If it is in standby, the moment you access the MS300 hard drive, the MS300 turns itself on, and lights up. As for the MCD500, which I am assuming the Sonos zone player feeds a digital signal to, I have no idea how that piece got turned on.

Just checked again. No lights on either the 300 or the 500 save for the red stand-by light. I can understand that the disc could spin up but I would have thought it would have powered up.

Jim, the MS300 and MS750 will stay in standby when they are not already turned on and are being accessed by a Sonos or something like an Escient ZP1.

As for the MCD500, do you have its outputs or the Sonos' analog outputs connected to your whole house system? The Sonos is accessing your MS300 through your network and then sending its digital output to the MCD500 for your main system, right?

I guess another alternative is that you have another Sonos connected to your main system.

Jim......Tell us how the Sonos zone player is connected to your system. Do you have more than one zone player?

My SonoS is connected to the optical output of the MCD-500. My MS-300 is connected to the digital out. If I want to listen to Rhapsody or Pandora in my 2-channel room via the Sonos I select the optical output of the MCD-500.
The Sonos connects wirelessly to my network via a wireless bridge. There is another SonoS unit connected via RCA's to by whole house system.

Well, that explains why the MCD500 didn't need to get out of standby - the whole house Sonos connected to the MS300 via your network, and the MS300 doesn't have to come out of standby for another network-connected device to access it. I have three Sonos units plus two Escient ZP1's, and my MS750 doesn't have to come out of standby to be accessed by any of them, and it can be accessed by more than one device simultaneously.
